  1. Perception of Science
Comparing now and the beginning of the semester, I think my knowledge on science is a lot more clear. In my perspective, the Science News Stories, Molecules of the Week, and the Consumer Products really helped to see science and chemistry in a more complex way. Also, having the chemistry blog on the website to refer to what other people have come up with was also extremely helpful in order to better understand the world of chemistry. My understanding towards chemistry is a lot better due to these types of assignments.

2.) Before taking this Chem-1A course, I wasn’t so analytical about the reasoning behind every day reactions that many people fail to acknowledge. I used to turn the stove on, turn on the lights, and even blow up a balloon without realizing the chemistry involved in what I was doing. Many people would care less to indulge into thought about it, but after learning about the chemical principles behind certain reactions, there comes a time when you can apply what you’ve learned in class to the real world, and in this class, unlike a few others, you can do just that. I can confidently say that the more I learn from the Chem-1A lab and lectures, the more I’m prepared to face real world problems.

2)My perception towards science and chemistry now compared to the beginning of the semester has changed a lot. At the beginning of the semester I didn’t understand basic things in the real world that had to do with chemistry. Before taking chemistry 1A I always wondered why certain things happened or imagined scenarios, but that’s all I could of done was imagine. As the semester is ending I have learned a lot from lectures and labs that now I understand chemistry a lot more that I can understand why certain things react the way they do as well as imagining scenarios.

    2. Before I began taking this Chemistry course, I had no idea how to calculate how many moles of air in a beaker or how to determine what wavelength of light are in each colour. Now I am more scientifically minded and enjoy thinking about how certain products work chemically. This class has made me more interested in science and I am excited to be taking chemistry 1B.

  5. Compared to the beginning of the semester to now, I have realized that my perception of chemistry has changed a lot. At first I did not know what to expect about this class but as the semester went by, I learned how to change grams to moles to moles to grams so that we can know how much of a certain molecule compound to use during labs. Also, doing science news, molecule of the week, and consumer products made me realize how chemicals are used for everything we use and/or consume. Lastly, this class has helped me think critically and because of it, I have learned to actually work out problems especially on in class assignments, tests and quizzes.

Compared to the beginning of the semester I see exactly how big a role science plays in our lives. More specifically the molecules that make up everything from the toothpaste we use to the oil in our cars, even as far as the pigments in our clothing that tell us what color it is. Science has an explanation for much of what makes up the very objects we use daily. I can say I view science differently now because I have a better understanding of why substances behave certain ways due to combinations with other molecules, changes I temp, pressure, etc. This understanding helps me understand the molecular level of substances instead of just understanding the surface layer of how substances work. This has also helped me understand how chemistry correlates to classes like physics, astronomy, biology; for example the fact that physics and chemistry are needed in making magnets work. Overall this class, though puzzling at times, has really opened my mind to a deeper understanding of how chemistry works through everything we do.

  7. My perception of science and chemistry has slightly changed. Due to this class I have a more opened view of chemistry. I did not think things like stain removal, wavelengths of light, or baking had to do with chemistry but I now do. The science news of the week showed me amazing new discoveries which inspire me. The molecule of the week was very fun because I got to look for chemicals in every day products which showed me chemistry is in everything. The product of the week showed me again that chemistry plays a big role in the things I use on a daily basis. So yes my perception of chemistry had changed, it’s been widened.

  8. 1. Jo Salao 8-11

The last time that I took chemistry was in high school and there is a huge difference in depth and scope of information. It wasn’t until this class that I actually grasped the idea that chemistry exists in practically all aspects of our lives. I see chemistry and science as the back bone of life, where one can’t exist without the other. What helped me a lot throughout this semester is having prior knowledge of physics because many principles of physics are also used in chemistry. Now, I have a better understanding of how why things do what they do. When I say things, I mean how certain products work, why certain products react and why others don’t, and why a person dies once they can no longer smell rotten eggs. Thus, I see science and chemistry in a completely different way from before starting this course.

  9. There are big differences between my perception toward chemistry in the beginning of this semester and my perception toward chemistry now. Before these assignments I had never put attention on all those things I use every day. Now after these assignments every single time that I am cooking I think about the changes in my food and ask myself what are the reactions happening in it. Also, thanks to these assignments now I know where to look for information related to chemistry.

  10. 1) Vanessa Green, lab 8-11
    2) Compared to Chemistry 22, and the beginning of the semester, my perception of chemistry has changed a lot. At the beginning of the semester, I could already tell that the concepts we were going to learn are going to be in more depth, and I realized that everything in this world is related to chemistry. In Chem 22 we didn’t have open ended tests and quizzes, so to have that in this class makes me really have to apply the concepts that I learned. This class has taught me the different chemical reactions that happen, and why they even react. I see a big difference in my perception of chemistry looking back at all the different concepts we learned or went into more detail for.

  11. 1) Alex Ramos Lab Section: 2-5

    2) My perception of Chemistry when first starting this course was that I didn’t know much about Chemistry. Now after attending lectures and labs I’ve learned about combustion reactions, conversions, and how to apply what I learned in the course to the real world. The way I look at Chemistry and science after all the assignments and labs through out the semester is differently to than what I first started. I can say with out a doubt this course has made me understand how Chemistry is involved and responsible for all the things we do and use in the real world.

  12. Karen Landeros
    2-5
This chemistry course including my other science courses have demonstrated a deep obscure pathway that was never talked in depth. Now compared to the beginning of the semester I tend to relate my understanding with things I quite didn’t pay attention to, such as the place we live, the products we use, the workplace setting we are surrounded by. I view science and chemistry the differently as a result of this assignment and course, because not only did we have to stop and relate belongings but use our knowledge for labs using a formula that I wouldn’t ever consider being used for. So yes I found this course experience different in an eye opening factor.

  13. 1. Cesar Virgen, Lab Section: 2:00-4:50 pm

    2. My perception of chemistry and science has changed since I have attended this class, Chemistry 1A. In the beginning, I had no idea that chemistry is the foundation of our way of understanding life. Chemistry plays a vital role in our lives when it comes to new discoveries, technology, medicine, and more. Chemistry has given me insight on the numerous objects around me on how they function and why they react. During these weeks, I have understood conversions, chemical bonds, elements, and much more that will help me in the future. Science is a wonderful subject to puzzle our minds with real life situations and challenge us to discover new methods for these circumstances.

  14. Deeksha Prakash
    TTH 2-5

Before taking chemistry, I was used to approaching and thinking about a problem in a physics and math mind set. However, now I am able think from different directions and analyze various problem. In chemistry, we learned about certain topics that I have covered in physics; however, they were focused on a different aspect or there was a different approach. This was interesting because at the time I was not sure there were other ways and learned how chemistry is very relevant to the world we live in. Since I am a STEM major, I have always had a passion for science. But taking this class has definitely increased that passion.

  15. Aylin Peralta Lab Section: T, Th 11-2

My perception of science has changed a great amount since the beginning of the semester, especially in Chemistry! Before beginning the semester I had attempted Chemistry 3 times. Twice in Highschool and once at Hartnell when taking the Chem 22 class. Even after taking Chemistry three times I didn’t understand it. I passed the classes miraculously with a C. Chem 1A challenged me, which is why I can honestly and confidently say that I understand the concepts of Chemistry more than I ever did. I never realized how fun it could really be when you actually understand it and know how to work with it.

  16. In the beginning of this semester I had basic knowledge of chemistry from previous chemistry classes. Having almost finished this chemistry course my understanding on chemistry has become stronger. The science new articles were fun as they allowed me explore new ideas in the scientific community. Molecule of the week and consumer product of the week assignments were great as they allowed me to further understand the substances that we often use. Overall the class has been a great application of familiar topics of chemistry.

  17. -Meghan Dyck (Lab 2-5)

Has this course and assignment changed my perception of science and chemistry? I’d say that to some extent it has. For example, the consumer product of the week assignment made me think critically about HOW the products I use chemically work, rather than just wondering if the product actually works or not. Another example would be the actual science news assignment; this caused me to go out and find out new scientific information. I especially found the articles about outer space interesting, and it’s made me more interested in seeing what can be done in terms of discovering space. An example that incorporates information from lab might be how some high-powered telescopes can use light emission and absorption to determine what elements might be present on distant planets and stars, which could even lead to a determination of whether or not a system is hospitable for supporting life. In general, this class and these assignments led me to understand that chemistry isn’t just relegated to what’s in the lab and that there’s a lot more to learn.

  18. Leah Edwards, Lab Section 2-5

My perception of science and chemistry did change since the beginning of the semester. I was able to learn about substances and their properties more in depth in this class. Especially when we were able to test out our experiments and apply what we’ve learned from lecture during our labs. I enjoyed being able to test our hypothesis in class and carry out our own experiments. During this time I was able to learn trial and error, making mistakes in class and being able to succeed in our experiments as a team was a good experience. The science news articles were enjoyable because I was able to research more about autism and learn a lot of new research that was done in this field. Molecule of the week was cool as well because I never thought of the chemicals and ingredients that go into the products or food that I consume as closely as I did this semester. Doing these assignments during the course broadened my knowledge about science and chemistry. It was an interesting part of our class because we were able to go out and research the products and articles of our own choice to better explore what is around us and what really sparks our interests.

  19. Adam Tanoue T/Th 11-2
At the beginning of the semester I had a general understanding about science and chemistry. I know that biology was difficult but I didn’t think Chem would provide such a challenge. Learning how Chem relates to real life such as, removing stains or how the amount of baking powder makes a pancake rise. It helped build the bridge between Chem and real life and that made me see it as important and interesting. Also learning how Chem relates to everything makes everything seem more complicated in a way.

  20. – Remel Gloria

I always perceived science to be the endeavor of observing, analyzing, and studying the natural world, and the invisible world that contains invisible phenomena to control once its laws have been mastered. The quality of life for individuals is directly proportional to the scientific impact of their nation or community; As more scientific discoveries are made, more scientific principles may be applied to new inventions, and the individuals in that nation or community may enjoy technology that makes their life significantly less difficult as a result. Taking CHM-1A has made me love the science of chemistry, and all the sciences much more because I enjoy thinking of possible new methods to many of the world’s problems using the concepts I learn in class while pondering throughout the day. Although many of the problems bewildered me throughout the course, I feel that I am now able to solve problems better in chemistry and in my personal life after the course as a result of the challenging questions requiring me to mentally imagine problems as a jigsaw puzzle to deconstruct into pieces, and apply a new concept to solve. I feel excited of what concepts I will master in advanced chemistry, science, and engineering classes because applying the scientific principles to create a new invention, or make improvement on an existing product for many people to enjoy is the next thing closest to God.

  21. Rafael Mendoza
    Lab Section: 8AM-11AM

I believe since I took this course, my perception for science and chemistry has changed dramatically. I have been more curious on the applications of chemistry and engineering in the real world ever since I started to take this course. I am more confident in the concepts for chemistry, and I have a better understanding of the true applications of chemistry, for example, distillation.

  22. Mylisa King
    Lab 8AM
From the beginning of the semester till now, I view chemistry differently. I knew some basic things about chemistry going into chem 1A, but I never realized that chemistry is all around us. We basically use chemistry to make and use everything. Also throughout all the labs and lecture I now understand and grasped concepts way better than I did in Chem 22.

  23. Isaac Suarez
    Lab 8-11 Tues/Thurs

From the beginning of the semester to nearly the end, my views on science and chemistry itself have changed immensely. Knowing how to utilize chemistry in my everyday life is also a skill I’ve taken from this course, whether it’s what kind of detergent or bleach to clean up a stain, what properties I should look for in my toothpaste, and also how to keep specific valuables from rusting. Chemistry surrounds us everyday whether we realize it or not and it’s fascinating to begin to understand how our world around us works.

  24. Jasmine Rodriguez
    Section: 1283
Not taking chemistry 22 and going straight to chemistry 1A was quite a struggle for me. The first weeks of chemistry I thought I wasn’t right for the class, I felt so insecure and besides the fact that I’m shy to ask for guidance, made it even harder. But chemistry has made me to understand how things work in life and how chemistry affects everything around us. I still consider chemistry and science to be the same because they both have to do with mysteries and confusion and of course speculations on how many things are built and formed. My perspective on chemistry got me thinking/guessing on how chemical bonds and molecular structures form substances. Chemistry is a mystery there’s so many molecules to distinguish, but it’s actually fun when it comes to labs.

  25. Israel Galaz
    Lab 8:00am-10:50am

Looking back toward the beginning of this semester my thoughts towards chemistry and science was so much different. I didn’t think chemistry and science had to do so much in our lives. Just by taking chem1A and physics this semester thats when my mind change and chemistry plus physics have change my perspectives and now I view everything so different. Even though all these different types of science class course are different as well with the chemistry course at some point through the course it will make sense all together. Yes, my perception of chemistry ad science is different because I’m understanding it little by little each day.

  26. Alejandra N. Ponce
    T/TH 2-5

Since the beginning of the semester my perception of science and chemistry has not changed all that drastically. However, it has developed as I continue to learn about the world me and the mechanisms behind it. My appreciation for science has only grown. In chem-22 we touched base on a lot of the topics we are covering now but this time around the scientific principles make a lot more sense. Especially because we have been able to apply and observe those principle in the lab with experimentation. I like to think about the fact that everything we see is just composed of atoms of elements and bonds. It is fascinating. This course has been refreshing and I think my perception of science and chemistry has changed because I now better understand the connection between the lectures and work we do in lab.

  27. Andrea Delgado
    Lab Section 8-11
Before this class I was not as aware of all the chemical reactions that take place in our everyday life. Chemistry is important to everyday life. I believe one of the most important applications of chemistry is, medicine. Some of the food consumed each day comes directly from chemical processes.

  28. Nancy Valdez
    Lab 11-2
I believe my perception of chemistry and science has broadened due to this course. I didn’t realize the extent that chemistry is involved in everyday products that we purchase. Things that we do on a regular basis like wash our clothes or take a shower also involve chemistry. It makes those simple things more interesting to think about regarding how and why chemicals react the way they do.

    1. Things we do on a regular basis require so much chemistry that we overlook it until its taught to us like with the detergent and its fundamental basis of “like dissolves like.”

  29. Evelyn Macias TTh 2-5
Compared to the beginning of the semester, my view on chemistry has changed for the better. Back in high school, all I ever was taught was acids, bases, and the periodic table. I was never told it could possibly involve light spectrums and the process of making pancakes from scratch. I now see how chemistry can be applied to and be seen all around us everyday.

  30. Alejandra Soto
    Lab T-Th 11-2
Chemistry 1A did change my perspective on chemistry and how science works. It taught me that there needs to be precision and accuracy when recording data and that there is chemistry everywhere. Chemistry 1A enriched my understanding and explained fundamental laws that exist in Chemistry. For example, the different types of bonds and the way compounds are shaped. Everything from making nuclear bombs, to the way our own bodies work requires chemistry.

  31. Deion Hernandez
    Lab 11-2
Coming into the semester I believed that chemistry was going to be a drag and an obnoxious class I had to complete. After taking 1A I’ve now learned about how much of what we use and do on a daily basis has some form of chemistry involved in it, which is pretty crazy. I’ve learned a lot since in High school I really didn’t pay attention and somehow passed the class; chem 1A has made it so that I had to pay attention and actually try in order to actually understand the material.

  32. Maria Santibanez
    Lab 8-11

At the beginning of the semester, I never thought that chemistry is everywhere since it has a great influence on human life. For example, thanks to lab experiments, I realized that we can find chemistry in the kitchen and food, packaging and content. Also, chemistry is the key in the elaboration of many medicines. Finally, chemistry can be found in the daily actions, when turning on the stove, when turning on the car, the solar energy, simply our body performs chemical functions. Now that I have learned about chemistry, it seems very interesting to know more about this subject that is truly significant in our lives.

  33. Andres Rodriguez
    Lab 11-2

Honestly I wasn’t looking forward coming in to this class due to my high school experience. However, after deciding to take a shot at Chem 1A, I came to an realization that it’s not chemistry that makes it hard, but the kind of professor you have. This course was actually interesting in learning the formulas & understanding how each element reacts and how they’re used. Especially in lab sessions where you get to work with your hands.

  34. Prashant Naidu
    Tue/Thur Lab: 2-5 PM

As a biology major, I was convinced at the start of the semester that chemistry was going to be tedious with lots of memorization and hard labs along with exams. However, I got the shock of my life when I got into the rhythm of the class and I can now say that my perception of science and chemistry has changed. I have and amazing professor for lecture who makes the subject and each class interesting and another whose lab sessions make us think outside the box. I though biology was its own concept of science, but you need to know chemistry to truly understand biology. In fact, their is chemistry in everything in our lives and we as students have seen those with our own eyes. For example, I now know the science behind stain removal and the chemical reactions with stains and various stain removes (I guess bleach only masks stains, it doesn’t remove. I was lied too!). I now understand that their is no life without chemistry.

  35. Maria Altamirano
    Lab 8:00-10:50am

The way I viewed chemistry before the course and the way I view it now are completely different. Chemistry is really important simply because it is everywhere. The extent chemistry has is tremendous because chemistry is not only involved everywhere but also in everything, from making pancakes, to washing clothes, and in the medicine we consume. My point of view when it comes to chemistry has really changed and I have learned many new things that have taught me to comprehend why something reacts the way it does. Just like biology and mathematics take a huge role in our lives I now know that chemistry is one of the subjects that takes on a big role as well. I am looking forward on knowing what is next to learn.

  36. Chem 1A
    Lab T/Th:11-2pm

I have always viewed chemistry as a very hard subject. In my previous class I had a difficult time understanding how to do formulas and equations. This class definitely helped me understand how to do all that. At first I didn’t realize that chemistry was everywhere in our daily life and I’m sure most people do not know it either. I definitely view chemistry in a whole different way now.

    1. Lab 11-2PM

      Rocio,
I also didn’t have a great experience in previous chemistry courses, which made me perceive chemistry as a difficult course. Yet, this course allowed me to acknowledge that chemistry is actually quite fun. With the understanding that I acquired this semester, I now understand the importance of chemistry in our daily lives. I agree that so many are oblivious to what really goes on around us, like while we’re listening to music, cooking, driving there’s so many chemical process occurring; even as we breath, or metabolize our meals hahaha.

  37. Fatima Gama
    Lab T/Th 11-2PM

Upon entering this course, I never really put thought into the role that chemistry played in our daily lives. I had some knowledge due to previous science courses I took in high school, but now I was able to attain a better understanding. After taking into account everything I learned through this semester, I now understand why chemistry is indeed characterized as the central science. Chemistry is everywhere. Without the conversion of simple molecules into complex ones, life on Earth would have not been possible. In addition, our bodies process chemicals constantly. One might even say, that we are chemically dependent. Such simple things like baking, cleaning, breathing, driving, all require chemical reactions to carry out their intended functions. All in all, I look forward to further enriching my understanding regarding chemistry; since I personally find it so intriguing.

  38. Maria Taveras
    Lawrence Yee
    Lab Section: T/Th 8:00-10:50 A.M.

Before taking this class, I did not like Chemistry at all. I remember that I was suffering when I was looking at my ED Plan, due to the fact that I had to sign up for so many Chemistry classes (because of the requirements for my major). I just didn’t like it, because I thought Chemistry was just memorizing the names and laws of some scientists. But, it is not. Now that I have taken this class, my perception of Chemistry has completely changed. Now, I see the science of Chemistry as a fascinating and mesmerizing tool that we all should learn how to use! Chemistry is everywhere in the world around us. It is on the food we eat, the water we drink, the clothes we wear, the medicines we take, the air we breathe in, the feelings/emotions we feel, and more. Isn’t that amazing? By using our knowledge of Chemistry, we can make a perfect, fluffy, and delicious pancake! It never crossed my mind that we needed Chemistry to make a good quality pancake. Chemistry plays a key role in everyone’s lives and touches almost every aspect of our existence in some way. It is amazing that before, everything was so simple to me, like just using detergent to get rid of a stain without even thinking how the stain was removed (or not even wondering if the stain was removed at all). But now, I actually know and understand the chemistry that makes detergents remove stains. It is also amazing how Chemistry connects the other branches of science. I have seen Chemistry everywhere, even in my Calculus class! Now that I have taken this class and that I have done all of these assignments, I don’t see Chemistry as a course only, but also as our daily lives.

    Section: TTh 2-5
In this class at the beginning of the semester I thought it was going to be one of the hardest classes that I have ever taken before, but it actually came out as a really interesting class and pretty easy to understand. When I first thought about chemistry I would think that is just for people who are involved into sciences and also that its such a complex field, but as the semester went on I started realizing that everyone is a chemist and even for the most simple stuff that we do. For example, growing or cooking food to cleaning our home and bodies we are doing a chemistry reaction; then I realized that chemistry is part of everything in our lives. I also leaned by doing chemistry that is one of the physical sciences that help us to describe and explain what we do in the world.

  40. Eva Arreola
    Lab T/TH 11-2

My perception of science and chemistry has definitely changed since the beginning of the semester. I knew this class would be more challenging than the previous chemistry class I took, but seeing it’s applications in everyday life has helped. Learning about the chemical reactions in our body processes, cooking and cleaning products was very interesting. Now that I have a better understanding of chemistry I feel more prepared to take the next chemistry course for my major.

  41. Natalie Ortega
    Lab Section 8-11
In the beginning of this semester I thought I was going to be lost in the class because the last time I took a chemistry course was in high school. I always found chemistry pretty interesting but taking it at a college course I’ve a lot learned more. The labs that we have done throughout the semester has made me realize that we use chem in our everyday lives. And I like our Professor Lee makes each lab fun!

  42. Isabel Estrada
    lab (T/Th 2-5)
My perception of science and chemistry has changed throughout this semester. Taking this chemistry course has helped me understand how chemistry is connected to our everyday life and activities. For example rusting nails, removing stains, and baking was all put to the test when I had no idea these all had to carry out chemical reactions to work as intended. Working in lab has been tremendously helpful for me to understand the concepts taught in lecture. This subject is complicated but I’m glad the concepts were broken down in a way for me to actually enjoy learning.

  43. Elizabeth Cazares
    Lab: 11-2pm
In complete honesty, chemistry was not one of my favorite subjects. I always found it uninteresting and no need to understand. After taking this course I have realized that chemistry is an important factor in everyday life. The basic foundations in life such as eating and breathing includes chemical reactions. It’s fascinating to know that everything around you is chemistry. My perception of chemistry and science has changed by realizing all the different aspects every science course includes.

  44. Jaime Flores
    11-2 T,Th

Like many of the others who have posted, I also did not take into account how chemistry works in our daily lives. This class has shown me how much chemistry is around us at every second of our lives. The last time I took chemistry was in high school my sophomore year, so it’s been a while but I did enjoy it. I came into this class with high expectations of it being a difficult yet fun class and Professor Yee has done exactly that. Professor Yee has made this class very enjoyable and has taught me a lot of new concepts of chemistry. Every time I have an alcoholic beverage I can always picture the chemistry behind the drink and how it is going to affect me. Overall my knowledge on this subject has grown and I have had plenty of fun learning it.

  45. Sandra Ayala
    Lab 8-11

At the begging of the semester I had the idea that everything in life required chemistry or biochemistry. However, I did not know why or how. Now I see things from a different perspective and try to explain to my family members how is that something works. For example, how is it that milk helps you out with spicy foods and not water. I have gained an interest to know why is it that stuff behaves the way it does.

  46. Maria J. Gonzalez
    Tuesday/Thursday 8:00 – 11:00 am

During this past summer, I had a chemistry course that I wasn’t even required to take as a way to prepare myself for Chem 1A. Despite that course, chemistry wasn’t something I would take into account to understand things in our daily lives. After taking Chem 1A, however, I am now able to think about chemistry when I try to understand how a product works, why something happens when I cook, or even weather conditions. My attitude towards chemistry has also changed because I used to perceive it as a difficult subject that I would struggle to understand. Now, even though I wouldn’t say it’s easy, I know that with some effort I can totally comprehend chemistry.

  47. Jesus Hernandez
    Lab. 8am

My point of view changed so much. For example, when im trying to help my mom wash clothes, I know that I must use detergent to remove certain oils from the clothes. Wherever im brushing my teeth I remember that certain mouthwash workes better at whitening than others. Know I kniw to look for certain chemicals in products that I buy everyday. In food, I try to avoid bad and unnecessary ingredients. I dont drink any soda now because its somewat acidic and has to many bad chemicals. Also, whenever someone eats something soo spicy I can let them know to use dairy products to remove the chemicals off their taste buds properly. Know that I have a better Understanding in chemistry I can live a little bit healthier and safer.

  48. Edgar Cardoso

About 3 months ago my grasp on chemistry was minimal, I had few faint memories about conversions and the different elements and their properties. The fuse to learn about chemistry helped me understand more than I can handle, there is a lot I still don’t know, I know basics, which is what will help me through the series of chemistry and the science behind everything. I can’t look at sodium bicarbonate or hydroxide or other elements and compounds the same way I did before, I see alkaline, bases, acids, reducers, oxidizers, catalysts, concepts I can appreciate and apply at an everyday stance to be cautious around and learn more about.

  49. Jason Montoya
    T-Th 8-11

My perception of chemistry throughout this course has changed a lot. At first, I thought that chemistry wasn’t that important in life, but as we did the labs and all the other assignments such as the molecule of the week and science news assignments, I realized that chemistry is all around us and is more important than I had originally thought. Chemistry is an amazing subject and I can’t wait to take it 1B next semester.

  50. In the beginning of the semester, I was aware of the importance of sciences like chemistry in our day-to-day lives. This assignment and this course especially allowed me to see that there is far more applications and uses for the knowledge of chemistry. I have begun to realize how overpriced many items can be when it has substances in it that cheaper items contain as well. I have also been able to apply many of the concepts to my car, my home, my animals, and my career; my wheel was punctured and I was able to look forward in temperature changes to anticipate pressure changes, I was able to explain why using bleach in certain parts of the home is dangerous to my family, I use many concepts of different chemical reactions in regulating my turtle’s water, and I use much of the information in organic chemistry in studying to be a veterinarian. Most importantly, I have been able to enrich my younger sister’s education with fun chemistry facts and interesting science news.

  51. From the begging of the semester to now my perception of science and chemistry has significantly changed. It had been about 3 years since I’ve taken a chemistry course and I had forgotten most of my knowledge in this subject. On the same note in high school chemistry we hadn’t gone in-depth so I truly didn’t understand how elements reacted with others or the forces involved within compounds. Now to date my view has changed positively because I know understand how certain elements interact with others, how certain elements are unstable, thus in the real world we find them as ions because they have stabilized. Also we have learned about acids and bases and how they work. For example, if I come in contact with and acid I would need to use a base to neutralizes the substance. Lastly, many of these concept I have learned in the course will be used in many of my physics and engineering courses, thus helping me in the long run.

  52. At the start of the semester, I simply thought of chemistry as not having a lot of importance in my major. After a semester in this class, I realized that chemistry is actually very important not only in engineering but in everyday life. The core the engineering materials class is chemistry. For example, the strength of a beam or frame depends on the type material used, which depends on the properties of the material, which are determined by chemistry. Everything that is learned and built–from cars to food to light–all have chemistry in their foundations, and this class helped me realize that. Along with that, these assignments–molecules, science news, and consumer products of the week–helped me become more open to reading articles outside of engineering. I find myself less reluctant to read articles related to chemistry, physics, and biology, even when I first had no interest in them.

  53. viana medina
    lab 11-2
At the beginning of the semester, I found chemistry as simply a science class I needed to take in order to proceed forward with my major. I also knew that like most sciences chemistry is important in our day to day lives but now it’s interesting just how it works microscopically. now my understanding of chemistry has changed, it helps you make informed decisions about products you can mix and ones to stay away from. It helps you to understand chemical reactions that can increase your cooking and baking outcomes. It teaches useful skills such as logic, reasoning and problem solving.

  54. Danithza Magana, Lab 11-2
At the begging of the semester I knew chemistry was important. What I didn’t know was that chemistry is happening in the everyday life, at all times. There is always a reaction happening somewhere with something. This course changed how I see life in general, because I know there’s always a reaction happening. Thanks to all the news assignments, consumer product of the week, molecule of the week, and Nobel prize winners, helped me to become more interested in science articles. This course made me reaffirm my interest in science.

  55. In the beginning of the semester, I was not sure how I would use Chemistry basics in my life and how it would help. After learning the the Course, my perceptions has definitely changed. I understand more about chemical reactions that occurs in a particular substance while cooking, cleaning etc.. It’s very interesting to know the chemical properties of each substance we consume everyday. Also, Chemistry lab experiments were very useful and informative. The Concepts helps me with my other courses as well.

  56. I started this semester with only some information about the chemistry and just a few knowledge about how it is related to our daily lives. Even though I love chemistry and the way that everything around us that has to deal with chemistry, but since it’s been a long time since I took my first chem class at the beginning, I was kind of afraid of the idea that I’m going to deal with chemical substance reactions and formulas, but now with my perception of science and chemistry has significantly changed, I started to think of chemistry and science as a team to complete each other. Now I can work with many substances and with all the awareness of what is going to happen to their reaction as far as I learned. Also, in this class, I learned the different reactions of an acid and base, the pressure and the temperatures changing, energy, heat changes, light and color radiation, and how they relate to each other in our daily lives. Knowing all of that information will help me understand how to be aware of the cleaning chemical that I used in my house, as well as the products that we used daily and how to buy the less harmful products toward mine and my family health.

  57. I still remember at the beginning of the semester I had no idea what anyone was talking about. I had a really hard time understanding the concepts of Chemistry. As time went on I started to catch up more and more. As of now I feel pretty confident about the subject and have a better understanding of what chemistry is about. I have learned a lot this semester and I view chemistry differently than I did at the beginning.

  58. Jose Zavala, Lab 11-2

At the beginning of the semester, I had a very weak understanding of what chemistry was. Now that it is the end of the semester, I can say I have definitely learned a lot and now have a solid foundation of knowledge when it comes to chemistry. I was unaware of how much chemistry is involved in our daily lives and how it worked. This assignment and the class overall has helped me understand this aspect much better. I have always been very interested in science as a whole, but chemistry is what caught my eye the least. After taking this class, I have become more interested in things involving Chemistry, and that is credit to this class and the knowledge I have gained from all the labs and assignments I have had to complete.

  59. At the start of this course, I already had an understanding of many concepts in chemistry because of physics but understanding it through at a molecular level has been the most interesting thing so far. Through this course, I have expanded my knowledge of heat transfer, how bonds form and their polarity and many other concepts.
Now that the course is coming to an end I would say that I definitely do see science and chemistry a lot different since I see how concepts of physics still apply to smaller objects and how different elements play significant roles in our lives.

  60. At the beginning of the semester, I thought I knew what chemistry was about; I thought it was just about reactions and the periodic table and electrons. But after this class, I realized that chemistry makes up everything on Earth. Many common items in our houses have chemical formulas, structures, and pH levels. I also learned that it can be used to help us such as tums neutralize acids in your stomach and how the pressure of air changes in different places. Also how many objects work such as a fridge and how it uses pressure to get cold air and hot air balloons use hot air because it is less dense than the 1atm pressure outside. This course taught me a lot of stuff about how the world works and I view science very differently.

  61. I have only taken one chemistry class and that has been CHEM- 22 at Hartnell. I just thought it was elements and reactions. So before I took CHEM- 1A, I only knew the surface of chemistry, I didn’t know things in depth. But after taking this class, I realized that chemistry is all around us and it literally makes up everything on earth. I learned the science behind everyday objects, why things react the way they do, and what chemicals to avoid using. Since I am a biology major, I found it interesting that I have to take more chemistry classes than Biology. I know why now, because chemistry plays an important role in biology. I am glad that I am more informed as a student and a consumer that chemistry is simply much more than reactions and what not.

  62. My perception of science and chemistry now is way more important than I thought, since everything we do involves chemistry. For example, chemical reactions occur in our body the food we eat turns into energy that can be used for our cells. Science is so powerful since it can be used to deal with many sorts of problems such as treating diseases, developing new technologies. At the start of the semester, I didn’t really think it was that important because I didn’t see it as something that was involved in our everyday life.
I view chemistry and science the same as a result of this course since chemistry focuses on matter and properties how and why substances combine or separate to form other substances and is one of the physical sciences that helps us explain our world.

  63. My perception on science and chemistry has changed because of this class and the assignments. I have learned more about chemistry and how we tend to use it on our daily lives such as the products we use often. It is not the same as science, because it is a part of it, just like biology. It makes up for most of our lives but there is more to science than just chemistry. All the reactions have a reason on why they happen and it helps to understand what makes it happen in the first place. I know how to use chemistry in the outside world and be able to be more knowledgeable about it.

  64. The perception I had on chemistry from the beginning of the semester and the end of the semester has significantly changed. I knew some basic chemistry concepts before but now that I have a deeper understanding I do see how chemistry is involved in everything. I am a health major and a lot of the chemistry touches base with what goes on in our bodies. I am also conscious about what is being put into the body especially when you have a stomach ache! Tums is a base that will neutralize the acidity in the stomach for relief. Besides that I also look at things differently and think about the chemistry behind what is going on. For example, I bake a lot and I think about what needs to be done to get a certain taste, texture or look of the thing I’m making. Our whole world is a giant chemical reaction when I really look at it and it’s fascinating how it works together. Now that I have a better understanding of chemistry it’s great that I am able to apply what I have learned to make sense on what goes on around me.

  65. In the beginning of the semester the goal was to obviously learn the subject but going through the motion is a completely different dynamic. In the start of the semester I didn’t realize how chemistry is everywhere around the world . I didn’t realize products we use in our day to day life involved chemistry. For some reason I expected biology and chemistry to be alike somehow but it’s not. The lab time for chemistry showed the subjects are way different because chemistry seems as if it’s more relatable because it’s something we consistently interact with. Like making pancakes who knew that was chemistry because surely enough I didn’t . However, both of these subjects can interact and combine together. We use chemistry on a daily basis and the realization that it isn’t such a rare concept is fascinating.

  66. Jonathan Nachazel
    Lab 2-5
Before I took this class, I had a basic understanding of the many sciences that are responsible for the creation and processes of our universe, among them chemistry. Having finished this class, I can say that while my understanding has developed, my perception has not changed. I have always known about the important role science has to play in our world and in our understanding of it, just not quite its methods of operation. I enjoyed learning about the different ways chemicals can mix together to create new ones foremost, and my ability to rationalize logical outcomes from conducting certain experiments has also improved. I hope that Chem-1B can further take me along this learning process.

  67. When I was in India, I do not understand chemistry at all. I failed in chemistry subject two-three times in India . when I came to the united states, then I saw my Ed Plan. Ed plan has two chemistry then I talked to my concluder I am not good at chemistry. she said you have to all engineering major has chemistry. In my 4th semester, I took chemistry 22. I worked hard I got A. On the first day of chemistry 1A I was feeling a little low because chemistry 22 I took fall 2018, and chemistry 1A Fall 2019.My confidence went up because I started understanding chemistry a little bit more. In the world every single thing has chemistry. How chemistry work in the kitchen, laundry, collage, workshop, etc. This subject taught me basic knowlege to read and understand product labels, and how to solve problems.

  68. Before taking this class I did not really comprehend more than the basic chemistry that I learned in high school. Today I find my self dissecting everything around me. I try to put the functions of chemistry into everything like why lotion works the way it does. I also did not know that numbers are important in experiments. A simple calculation can mean just as much as a complicated one just to get an accurate answer. I am more conscious about everyday chemicals because we’ve learned that some can be harmful yet don’t really affect us that much which confuses me a little. Overall, it made me see how much a product goes through in the chemistry aspect.

  69. Before taking this course, I had a basic understanding of chemistry. I didn’t make any connections to the real world because I didn’t find any of it interesting. Honestly, I enrolled in this class because it was required for my major, so I wasn’t too excited about it. However, as this course is coming to an end, I’m realizing that chemistry is more than boring concepts. Through the labs, I have been able to answer questions such as “Is it really worth buying a sunscreen with an SPF of 50?” The science news assignments have helped me become more aware of my surroundings and to make more connections in my every day life. I have learned about different chemicals and how some consumer products work. While reading articles, I have learned that products don’t always work the way ads claim they do. In other words, this course has helped me appreciate chemistry more and apply concepts to my every day life.

  70. Before taking this course I had experience with chemistry due to taking a class in high school and in a semester of college. In the beginning of the semester I thought that this class would Im a way be easier for me because I had taken similar classes in the past. While it wasn’t easier I wouldn’t say it was hard. This class just made me realize that there are still many things that we could learn as we progress in the science field. There will always be something new that we will learn or expand our expertise. I also have more respect for science and chemistry. They play a huge role in our everyday lives and sometimes we don’t even think about it and this class has really opened my eyes to all of it.

  71. In the beginning of the semester I was a little intimidated with taking this Chemistry coarse. I had a small understanding of it all and if I am being honest it has never been one of my favorite subjects. Now that this semester has come to an end I can truthfully say that my perception of Chemistry has drastically changed. Today I am constantly finding myself analyzing everything around me and asking myself why it works in the way that it does. I have learned many things throughout the duration of this coarse such as the reactions of an acid and base, pressure changes, energy, heat changes and much more. I have grasped a better understanding of what Chemistry is and the important role it plays in our daily lives.

  72. In the beginning of the semester, I did not know much about Chemistry or science because the last chem class I took was a while ago. I honestly did not really enjoy chemistry but after taking this class, my perspective on science has changed. Now, I really like chemistry and I think it’s very useful to learn for our everyday life, it can help us learn how an antacid works, or how pancakes can rise better. Chem 1A has definitely changed my view on science and chemistry to a more positive view and I would like to learn more about it.

  73. Kevin Do, Lab T-TH 2-5

Chemistry in high school has prepared me for this course, but it did not cover everything we have learned this semester. The basic stuff like ph, valence electrons, periodic table, PV=nRT, states of matter, and how to balance equations were covered in my high school chemistry class. However, it did not go into the depth about the small details. For example, I knew how to balance equations, but I did not know that it can tell you how many moles react with each other. I see chemistry differently than when it was the beginning of the semester. Additionally, I see chemistry as a different branch of science that deals with what makes up the things around us. How molecules can be oxidized or reduced. How we can use the ideal gas law to find unknown variables. All in all, this chemistry course has showed me the miracles of chemistry and how everything around us has chemistry involved.

  74. Though the many years on the study of science, having a understanding on chemistry has over all change my view on the different applications that we come to live everyday of our life’s. Many people may think that chemistry is boring, but something like fireworks and explosions are based on chemistry, so it’s definitely not a boring science. Overall chemistry has made a change on my understanding on how atoms and molecules interact in the molecular state. It’s our responsibility to have a understanding on chemistry and other sciences in order to solve issues that may arise in our future generation.

  75. I would say my perspective on chemistry has completely changed. I thought chemistry was based off of chemicals. By chemicals I thought it was only high reacting chemicals. I did not know it could pertain to regular everyday chemicals. I now realize that chemistry is used in everyday understanding for ex if you eat turkey ( a lot of it) it’ll cause you to get sleepy or how after it rains the weather is warmer and the humidity has to be at a 100% before it rains.

  76. In the beginning of the semester I had a very cloudy understanding of chemistry. Up until that point I had only taken one chemistry course once upon a time in high school. It seemed like an eternity ago and the only thing I could remember was that I hated moles. The good thing was I have always been pretty good at math, and chemistry involved a good amount of it. I thought chemistry was just about chemicals and explosives, but I learned there was more to it. This semester we learned about mole conversions, chemical reactions, conservation of heat, electron configuration and so much more. This course was definitely challenging but also very do-able thanks to a great professor named Yee.

  77. Coming into the semester, I had really no knowledge of chemistry as i had not taken it since my sophomore year of high school and really did not pay attention enough for that to stick with me for more than 4 years. I understand it a lot more now of course and am able to apply this subject to real life situations outside of class now and have a deeper understanding of the substances that surround me. I had an idea of how deep chemistry was and how many layers it would have to it because of my experiences with Human anatomy and how complex that was so I figured the two would be somewhat similar. I took this class because it is a requirement for my major, but am glad I will be able to leave this class with more than just a grade.

  78. Since the beginning of the semester, I had limited knowledge with chemistry and science in general. It took a while for me to get back into the mentality of science since it had been a while since I had taken a science class. I can now more things by myself including how there is air in marshmallows and how titrations work. Going onto the upper/secondary classes of science I feel a bit more confident of my knowledge and abilities.

  79. Lab 11-2
Starting chemistry 1A I didn’t have too much knowledge going into it. I hadn’t taken a chemistry course since high school which was some time ago. I can definitely say the labs were a great way to fully understand all the topics we went over this semester. I enjoyed this class and have a better knowledge of chemistry! Thank you.

  80. Starting Chem 1A, I didn’t really have an understanding of how it worked because my high school chemistry teacher would always speed through without really explaining how he’d get the answers for the practice problems. It’s definitely a lot harder than I remember, but I feel like the labs were a really great way for me to understand the objectives because it was a visual example that I could grasp the concept of. I for sure have learned a lot more than I had previously did in my past classes.

  81. I have truly enjoyed broadening my perception on all science (molecules, science in relation to consumer products, and science related news stories). Prior to taking this class, I was introduced to chemistry for a short time when I was a student in UC Davis. However, this course has opened my eyes to the complexity yet universal concept of how much chemistry impacts our daily life. Not only through this assignment, but also through the chapters in our OLI assignments. I understand that this semester (or the entirety of 2020) has been unpredictable, so the lab has to undergo a few adjustments to make it doable at home, but with doing that, I was able to understand the workings of chemistry in my every day life. I truly did enjoy this assignment and what this course offered me holistically!

  82. I feel as if I have a better understanding of science and chemistry more then in the beginning of the semester. Going through the lecture videos and having the labs for experience really helped my progress throughout the semester. Also being able to communicate and work with my fellow classmates was very helpful in understanding certain things. For example, if I did not understand something one my classmates could have and explained it to me so I could better understand the subject I did not. I view chemistry differently now because of this course, I’m not as scared of the subject due to the fact that I have a better understanding of it now.

  83. 1. Miguel Martinez (1026)
    2. My perception of chemistry and science in general hasn’t changed very much throughout this class. This course and these assignments have given me a better insight into science and chemistry topics. However, it wasn’t anything overtly new. Prior to taking this course I had some knowledge of chemistry because I took chemistry in high school. But this class did help me sort of find that knowledge again. For the most part I did enjoy the subjects in this course but it wasn’t really anything too new. This is also due in part to this being an introductory course but again I did enjoy what this class has taught me.

  84. Prior to taking this chemistry class, I was more or less familiar with certain concepts in chemistry from a class I took in high school. I remember being pretty engaged, but I think that after taking this class I was able to conceptualize a lot more and make real-life connections through the several immersive labs we had. My curiosity has definitely peaked. I like to learn what concepts of chemistry apply to things I see every day.

  85. I enjoyed the topics that I learned in this class. Before taking this class, my thoughts were that there are atoms everywhere because everything is made up of atoms. Through all of the information that I learned this semester, it made me realize that there isn’t just atoms but there are other things happening like chemical reactions happening. It was the labs that put this idea into perspective because the labs showed me the aspects in chemistry that are in my everyday life. Also, this class reinforced my problem solving skills. Specifically, the most recent OLI section on gas laws made me understand how to put variables that are inversely and/or directly proportional into an equation.

  86. Before taking this class I knew that science was an important subject but never thought how important this could be. Back then it was hard for me to understand the meaning of science and what it actually involved. Now I can even solve problems applying the laws by each scientist. Chemistry is a science. Whereas science is a field of knowledge that includes Chemistry, Physics, etc. Which I can say that after taking this course, they are two different subjects.

  87. I thought chemistry only applied to the sizes of atoms, at no point did I ever expect their nature or laws existed so prevalently in normal day interactions; like the oil in your shirt or the color in the world. Especially one point, I thought counting atoms was as futile as counting sand on a beach, but that is clearly wrong. Science is everywhere and doesn’t only exist on a page textbook, all dictated by things we cannot see but yet are, kinda magic in its own way.

  88. Before taking this class, I never really questioned the science behind chemicals and their reactions. After taking this course I find myself trying to relate the real world to what I learned in chemistry. Though this course was very challenging, I hope to continue learning more about science. I very science different because of this course and the assignment we were given. I think almost more about how this might work instead of just accepting them.

  89. The Chem 1A course has changed my perspective on the concepts of chemistry and science as a whole. The lab assignments especially have educated me on the chemical forces and properties of everyday items I use like baking soda and table salt. Even though the course was completely online I am absolutely looking forward to being able to study chem in person and perform hands on labs.

  90. My perception of Chemistry has changed significantly from the beginning of Chemistry 1a to the end of Chemistry 1a. Admittedly, I didn’t know how much impact chemistry had on our daily lives. For example, I didn’t know soda has an acid in it. Soon after I found out that very own acid breaks down tooth enamel. I was truly shocked all these years, and I didn’t bother looking at the ingredients located in the back of the soda can. Chemistry also gets much more interesting and complex. For instance, I had no idea how light was absorbed and emitted. Even Though it doesn’t seem complex, it sure was for me. The OLI and Lab’s were pretty interesting in this course. I was unsure how it would be possible to perform these labs in our homes, but in all honesty they ended up being fun. Overall, this course has made my understanding in science and chemistry much more effective. I am so glad I took this course even through a pandemic.

  91. The Chem 1A course has changed my perspective on the concepts of chemistry and science as a whole. I feel as if I have definitely learned a lot in this class. Some things things I didn’t know and some things now that I have a better knowledge of. This course has definitely changed my view on chemistry and taught me a lot.

  92. My perception of science and chemistry has definitely been changed by this class. Using real world application in our labs has really made me realize that chemistry is every, even in simple every day products. This class has helped me be more aware and appreciative of the science that actually goes into things because of the process of trial and error and studies people conduct to make them. This topic also reignited the flame I have for researching science topics that I find interesting!

  93. Jaden Martinez (1025)
My perception of chemistry and science hasn’t really changed very much throughout this class. This course and these assignments have given me a better insight and understanding into science in general but specifically chemistry topics. However, it wasn’t anything super new, but rather it was rather like building on previous knowledge. This class has also helped me be more understanding/aware of simple day to day products. Even though the course was completely online this semester, I will be looking forward to being able to study chemistry in person and perform hands-on labs.

  94. Taking this chemistry class has helped me understand how many things in our environment and body work and why they do so. I understood more about day to day products I use and what they actually do, or how some may be more harmful (corrosive) than we think. I have taken a chemistry classes before so I had some understanding in a few topics but I enjoyed experimenting with products and their use. Overall, I still see chemistry as important as I thought so starting off this class but learned more applicable ways to incorporate chemistry information.

  95. Briana Garcia
    Lab Section 1025

Throughout the course of this class, I have found that I am challenging myself more to understand how a product works or predict how it works. I feel like it is known that companies will create redundant products/sell you more than you need. By understanding basic product work, I now know if it’s necessary to buy the new product. I see more chemistry in products that I wouldn’t think twice about and why it behaves like it does. It’s also fun trying to explain how a product works to people. I look forward to learning more!

  96. Throughout the course of this semester, I stated to understand how multiple substances function and what makes them work the way they do. My perception of science and chemistry did change in some ways as it gave me better insight on simple items found at home. I found all this course material to be very interesting and useful as all this can be applied on everyday tasks and make one’s life much more simple. Although this course was fully online, I did feel like I was in an actual class doing all these experiments.

  97. While taking this course it has changed the way I see the real world and how I try to visualize the chemistry in it. I feel that I have learned quite a bit of new things while taking chem 1A. It has been interesting to learn and see all that chemistry does. I also realized that it’s important to know what chemicals are in our products because while some can be helpful there are others that aren’t.

  98. Chanelle Argueta Lab Section 1026

The perception of science and chemistry I had is chemistry is a subtopic under science along with physics. I have taken chemistry in high school; regrettably, I was only able to flashback memories but unable to apply to the course. Now thankfully, I have a better understanding of Chemistry. I have better recognition with the conversions, oxidation and reduction, shape, polarity, etc. For example, I can apply to real situations with stain removal, which is polar and not polar, to work on the stain. The topics were challenging, but I am pleased to be exposed to the material and learn.

  99. During the beginning of the semester, up until now, I feel as if my perception on science and chemistry has stayed the same. Of course, in a good way. Science has always interested me and knowing how chemistry applies to our lives is even more interesting. When I look at cleaning products, foods, metrics, and measuring supplies I immediately turn to chemistry. I have learned so much from our lectures, specifically significant figures and uncertainty due to having struggled with it but then learning the content. Yet alone the labs have been extremely cool when being able to understand the reasoning behind the activity and then conduct it through a chemist’s perspective. Chemistry will forever be one of my favorite subjects because I feel as if there is never a time when I do not learn something new. Every lecture, assignment, and resource gives me new insight on chemistry. My perception of science and chemistry is still the same, I want to continue to learn more like always!

  100. Coming to an end this semester, this class has gave me a newer and fresh view on both science and chemistry. I have always been interested in science and chemistry is somewhat a new topic that I have learned this semester but this class helped me realize just how much both science and chemistry are implemented in our everyday lives. Science and Chemistry is in our everyday lives from what we eat, to what we see and smell. Learning about chemicals we use in our homes, bonds in the liquids we drink as well understand how chemicals and elements break down and create something new. It has really made me understand more about Chemistry and Science , every assignment and lab helped improve my understand about the entire subject of it and I am eternally grateful.

  101. I enjoyed learning about topics I didn’t know before. I took chemistry back in high school and I didn’t really learned much in that class. Now I have a better understanding on chemistry and how it works throughout our life. I realized how important chemistry is in everyday basis since before I never bothered to take notice of chemicals in our products. I am looking forward in learning more chemistry later on and facing the challenges!

  102. Madeleine Foronda
    Lab Section 1024
My perception of science and chemistry now compared to the beginning of the semester has changed. This class has taught me that chemistry is everywhere and in our daily life’s. The labs that we performed in this class demonstrated the different ways chemistry is in our daily life’s. I wasn’t too sure if the labs would be the same but it was possible. Overall, CHEM 1A has taught me the importance chemistry and how much it plays a role in our lives.

  103. Before taking this class, I thought that chemistry was all about learning the periodic table and how certain elements can combine with each other. And what from what I remembered in high school, chemistry was never really interesting to me. However, this class took me by surprise and taught me that chemistry isn’t just about element, but how chemistry functions in our daily lives. The labs that we took further prove how chemistry is important in our lives, and it is something that I think many of us overlook. Overall, my view on chemistry has completely changed because I now know that chemistry is being used around us.

  104. My perception of science and chemistry now compared to the beginning of the semester has changed a lot. Coming into this course, I thought chemistry would just consist of the elements, mixing different substances, or atoms, etc. But really, it was something much more. When I took chemistry in high school, it was so much easier for me to understand because it seemed so easy to me. Now in college, learning about chemistry is so hard for me. I never realized how much work you have to put in to really understand the science of chemistry. Overall, this course has taught me that there is more to chemistry than just elements and atoms, the importance of chemistry, and how it used around us in our daily lives.

  105. Coming into this class I was quite nervous. My experience with chemistry a couple years ago was quite traumatizing. There was a lot of times I found myself struggling to figure out concepts and rules, but I was able to prevail. This class only furthered my understanding on chemistry as a whole. Although it was much harder to take because of all that is going on in our world and all these online classes, I’m glad I was able to better understand the concepts throughout the semester.

  106. Jesus Delgadillo

As the class progressed, my perception of science outside of the classroom increased. I had no idea that there were plans to make a conductive brick. This was extremely interesting considering how absurd and impossible that sounds. I am amazed at the advancements of science and chemistry. There was even a simulation done on a chemical reaction which was also remarkably interesting. I feel like I barely scratched the surface of chemistry.

  107. Adrianna Garibay. Chemistry 1A (1026).
At the beginning of the semester I viewed science and chemistry under the same category as a whole yet under different branches of science. Science appeared to me as something with explosions or chemical reactions that are typically seen in science projects like a volcano eruption. I now view science as a whole system with sub disciplines within it such as chemistry and physics. Chemistry appeared to me as everything having to do with the periodic table of elements and how products work internally, but I was not too confident about how it worked. I now view chemistry as an intrical part of everyday life, from the creation of ingredients in toothpaste to the implications of elements and compounds in medicine. My perception has evolved due to homework practice working and evaluating atoms and molecules and how much of an impact science has in the world.

  108. My perception of science and chemistry did broaden throughout the semester. My initial thought of the subject was that it all about the reactions and the end results when combining two elements or compounds. I have grown to realize that it has to do more with math. Numbers and calculations are highly involved when it comes to looking for the right end result. One thing that really made this class easier was looking at examples of equation and how they were solved. Even when I did not fully understand the processes of the physical reactions I know I was heading towards the right direction when I would get the answers to the equation correct. Chemistry is one of those subjects that I can find frustrating when I am not understanding clearly but it can be fun when I begin to get the concept.

  109. Over the course of the semester I was challenged to embrace the chemistry as an integral part of life itself. It was interesting to change my perspective of life from external to internal in terms of how things happen and why exactly they do. For example, water vapor isn’t simply water vapor, instead, it’s a combustion reaction of hydrogen gas. In this way, the course helped shift my perspective.

  110. Before taking Chemistry, I reviewed science to be a domain that contains subcategories like physics, chemistry, biology, and botany, etc. As for chemistry, I reviewed it to be the second most important subcategory in science after biology. Before the class started, I thought of chemistry to be just filled with experiments about acids and bases, with learning about the periodic table. Since the semester is coming to an end, I now view chemistry to be one of the keystones in science that helps interlock biology with the other subcategories in science. As for science, I still view it as being a domain with subcategories, but I believe each category is just as important as the other.

  111. In a lot of ways, my perception of science and chemistry remained the same from the beginning to the end of this semester. I have always seen science as this endless road of discoveries and delving deeper into the everyday things that surround us. From a young age, I have always been curious about the miniscule elements of the physical world and how it can be magnified for our understanding and learning. This course was definitely different since we had to do all of our labs from home, but this just furthered my understanding that science is everywhere and not just in a lab.

  112. Compared to the beginning of the semester I would say my view on science and chemistry has changed. At first I did not give much thought on how chemistry is around me in my daily life because it’s not a subject that interests me. After going through these chapters and doing these science news and chemistry blog posts I have learned that chemistry is involved everywhere in my life from brushing my teeth in the morning to turning off my candles at night. I now do pay attention more to everything that goes on around me and try to speculate what scientific principles are responsible. Overall I like this new view I have on science in my everyday life.

  113. From the beginning of the semester to now my view on science and chemistry has definitely changed. I believed chemistry just involved chemicals and was usually done just by scientists, but it was not until doing the Science News assignments that I realized chemistry is in our everyday life. Through the Science News assignments and Consumer Products assignemts I was able to see how chemistry is being used in our lives, whether it be from the chapstick I use to the medicine we talk when we are sick. This course has opened my eyes to a new side of life that we do not see, which I found very interesting.

  114. Look as the semester went by I learned more and more about chemistry. I started understanding formulas and theories that I didn’t understand in the beginning of the year. I started seeing patterns within problems and recognizing the problem and identifying it with a correct solution. My problem-solving problem-solving and critical thinking improved!

  115. As the semester is coming to an end I have grown my knowledge of science and chemistry. I thought I had a good stable plane of knowing what they both are but now that I have taken this course I have made a nice ground of knowing both. I see chemistry and science differently even though they both have concepts. The course has taught me that chemistry is more than just these formulas and equations that we must solve. No, it’s about building on top of those ideas and concepts you learn from each chapter.

  116. Compared to the beginning of the semester I know a lot more about Organic Chemistry. It was a very difficult semester since everything was online. I now view Chemistry in a whole different way. I didn’t know there could be so many different types of reaction and curved arrows and many other structures I hadn’t seen before. This class has definitely helped expand my Chemistry knowledge and has definitely challenged me.

  117. My perception of science and chemistry has significantly changed compared to its state in the beginning of the course. I had never given deep thought into the composition of products, other than the idea that they are manufactured at factories and such. However, taking this course has broadened my perspective enough to think about why certain products are made. For example, microwaves are commercially built to heat food, but they are not considered for the electromagnetic radiation they emit or the chemical composition of its material, which must withhold from reaction during its use.

  118. My perception of chemistry has changed completely compared to the beginning of the semester. I look at a lot of things in a completely different manner. I never really paid attention to lights and what colors get emitted and what gets absorbed and now it has made me aware. Also knowing how different things give off heat and how temperatures can change so drastically. This course has made me think about things on a deeper level.

  119. At the beginning of the semester, my perception of chemistry was that it was difficult to understand but that it is around us. I also knew that it was crucial to get the chemistry right, especially in our products and food. My perception has stayed the same but now I have more knowledge and doing the labs gave me more insight as to what really goes on in our day to day activities, like using Tums for an upset stomach. I still think it’s a complicated subject but I feel confident that I could explain to someone what we learned in this class if I run into an example in real life.

  120. Science and chemistry has always been a part of our daily life. Before the semester, I do not completely know what is the chemistry behind daily products that we use and its ingredients. Now that I learned something from our chemistry class, whenever I buy something I would look up the specific ingredient and make sure it is healthy for my body. This class made me become aware of what substances or ingredients I should put in my body before doing so. Science and chemistry class has been fun when you learn new things that you can use everyday.

  121. I took this class alongside the materials science and engineering class, so it’s been interesting to learn about material properties and then also learn about the chemical reasons for those properties, such as bonds, IM forces, etc. This course has given me a better understanding of the science behind everyday occurrences. The behavior of electrons as both particles and waves is especially interesting to me. I took physics 4C and we looked at the topic there, but I enjoyed looking more deeply into the subject here. I found the lessons on electron configuration and shape to be the most challenging, but they also shed a lot more light on the behavior of interacting molecules. I find chemistry more interesting now than I did at the beginning of the semester.

  122. Joshua Riley, Section 1025
I have always enjoyed science, I am a believer of the idea science allows us to understand how the world works. Chemistry dives into how processes occur (how a liquid becomes frozen) to why objects react the way they do (think of specific heat why some items heat up quicker than others) “““““““““. This class, even though it was tough for me allowed me to learn about the world I live in and spark my curiosity. I may have had a tough experience, but it was a good chance to test my grit and allow me to be a little smarter than I was before, which this course has allowed me to do. Let’s hope moving forward I have all I need to be successful in CHM-1B and EGN-4 which I will have coming up in future semesters.

  123. I’ve always found science and chemistry very interesting and fun. I had trouble understanding the material so at times it was challenging. Compared to the beginning of this course I’d say I am a little bit more comfortable. The OLI quizzes were challenging at times but seeing how it ties into the labs were pretty cool. Especially how labs tied into things we do everyday. Regarding the recent lab we did I’m sure knowing the best ways to take out a stain will be helpful in the future.

  124. My perception has changed. In the beginning of the semester I thought chemistry would be very difficult and hard. It hasn’t been easy of course, but my perception has changed from something unobtainable to something I can do if I practice at it and study. I did just that and I was able to learn a lot.

  125. Personally i have always had a weird perception of science and mainly chemistry. I do enjoy learning about the world that we live in and how theres more to it. But on the other hand, there is chemistry. The first time i took a chemistry class it was all new to me and I really did face a huge obstacle that challenged my brain. Even though it was tough, it has been one of my biggest accomplishments for passing that chemistry class. This semester i felt like it was more of a review about what chemistry is, and it was still quite challenging but i’ve realized that even though i knew what a tough objective it is, i still low key enjoyed having a challenge. Im hoping and working hard so I can end this semester successfully and move on to CHM 1B. Im hoping this course has me prepared for whats to come.

  126. My perception of science and chemistry now compared to the beginning of the semester has changed dramatically. Before the semester started I always though that chemistry was difficult and hard to understand. But after taking this class I now know that chemistry is not that challenging if you work hard and put a lot of time and effort into it. Chemistry is only challenging if you do not put effort into learning.

  127. My perception of science is that it is a very interesting topic to learn about and there are so many different things that fall under that science category, with chemistry being one of them. I came into the class thinking that chemistry is a hard class, and I still think it is, but I did learn a lot while in this class. I’ve always really liked science, but science itself is a bit complicated to understand, more time must be put in because I did struggle during this course. I have more science classes in my path ahead, but I will definitely be taking what I learned here and putting that knowledge to use in my future classes.

  128. I have always found science fascinating, the idea of learning how things work and how to come to be made, looking at the proccess in depth. At the beginning of the semester my perception of chemistry was that the subject in general is very complex. To the point where I was giving it some thought if I should really follow this path of having to take chemistry. I started my semester a bit rough with not getting the scores I wanted, yet I was still interested in the martial. Over the semester I came to learn how I have to take my time for this class to be able to understand what is at hand a bit better. Coming to the end of this semester I would say my view of science and mostly chemistry did change being that to be successful in this material I have fully commit. Only then I will be able to learn the material and make my life easier by not making chemistry hard for myself.

  129. I believe that the science news assignments have opened my eyes to how we interact with chemicals in our everyday life. I really enjoyed learning about molecules that I previously had not thought of in terms of chemical properties like caffeine. I think I got a new appreciation towards the complexity, yet simplicity of chemistry and how science is interconnected within each subject like physics and environmental science. I found the science news part interesting since I got to see how science is reported within our media and the different topics published from new findings on black holes to the effect humans are having on our environment through the use of harmful chemicals and pollution.

  130. Jose Emilio Lomeli-Vega and CHM 1A 1025
Before taking this course, I had little knowledge and literacy on scientific and chemistry topics. I did not realize how unaware I was of how the world worked from a chemical perspective. Now after taking this course, I feel as if my understanding for products, material, and different processes that I see in my everyday life has come into finer detail and I could explain different chemistry principles and concepts that apply in my everyday life. Now I see things way differently and I cant wait to take 1B

  131. When it came to chemistry and general science before this course I had some knowledge of the topic but was not confident with my knowledge of it. Now that I have taken the course and almost completed it I have found to see my knowledge of this topic grow indefinitely and overall I feel as if I learned a great amount and gained the confidence that I had lacked beforehand.

  132. My perception of chemistry has changed. Although this course was not easy I liked the introduction to the field. It is applicable in everyday events to removing a stain from my shirt to how water travels successfully to the top of the tree to water it. This introduction has made me more conscious of what is happening around me in the micro level. It has even made me more curious about my surroundings. I think I walk away with a the mentality that I can learn chemistry and apply it, which I previously thought was too hard for me to do.

  133. My perception of chemistry has altered in a positive way. I noticed that many things around us, products we use and consume revolve around chemistry. In all honesty, it’s a field I do not like at all. It’s difficult, but I’ve realized we need it. Understanding it can help us find solutions for almost anything. Without understanding it, we wouldn’t be using the products we use today.

  134. 1. Azalea Perez, Lab Section 1025
    2. My perception for science and chemistry has significantly changed compared to the beginning of the course. And now view science and chemistry in a new detailed light. There is so much small pieces that make up the whole. Furthermore, those pieces differentiate and determine the unique path the chemical, molecule or reaction will take. I never realized how complex and smoothly everything in my daily life is related to science and chemistry.

  135. My perception of chemistry and science has changed. I have learned a lot about chemistry and science in general since the start of the class. Chemistry and science, in general, has changed the world so much. I find chemistry difficult because there is a lot of knowledge such as equations, formulas, and other things. Without chemistry or science, the world would be different.

  136. My perception of chemistry and science has definitely changed. I feel like I understand the world around me more in a deeper sense. It was definitely a tough class but the knowledge I learned was worth the struggle I went through. Science is everywhere from the trees outside to the food I eat. I’m very happy I took this class, it showed me more than I could imagine.

  137. Alynna Quezada 1024
My perception in science and chemistry in the beginning, I saw it as a difficult thing. It was a total different language to me. Now its a language that I can see understand a bit more. I do view science and chemistry differently now, it still challenging. This course helped me understand chemistry a bit more than I did last semester.
In one paragraph, describe your perception of science and chemistry now compared to the beginning of the semester. Do you view science and chemistry the same or differently as a result of this assignment and course? Due 12/10/21, noon.

  138. My perception of science and chemistry, in the beginning of the year, has changed a lot to how I view chemistry and science now. For instance, there were a lot of objects that I never knew has specific chemical formulas; like the medical drug, aspirin. Also, things that I never knew about and questioned a lot, like how colors exist, were explained to me through this course.

  139. During my time in this chemistry course, my perception of science and chemistry has changed from when I started. Chemistry opened my eyes to the chemicals we use in our everyday lives and how important it is to understand the properties of the chemicals. Before I thought that chemistry was difficult and I thought that I would never be able to understand it but after taking this course I have gained confidence in my ability to understand chemistry. Chemistry has become a real interest in mine now because of this course.

  140. Carlos Rivera 1024
For me science and chemistry are mostly similar. Both have to deal with chemicals and it takes many test to fully understand what is happening with the experiment. At the beginning I felt like they were different since science has to deal with machines and technology whereas chemistry was just dealing with particles and chemicals. After spending some time with chemistry it feel like science and chemistry can go hand to hand in dealing with many life problem where we notice it or not.

  141. My perception of science and chemistry is relatively the same throughout the entire semester. They are important to our advancement of life and the future. Science is used to find more of the undiscovered and chemistry is used to find out about the discovered, that is how I would put that. both are pointing to our evolutions, in both good and bad ways, unlike vegans.

  142. Logan Nunez Section 1067

My perception of science and chemistry has changed a bit. I now realize that chemistry is very much a part of our everyday lives, and we don’t even realize it. Science I think is the idea of why things do what they do, and chemistry is the explanation of why things do what they do.

  143. Sergio Moreno/1065

Throughout this course I learned numerous things that changed my perspective of chemistry. At the beginning of the course I had to relearn every subject and try understand the math and explanations behind chemistry. I now find myself looking at ordinary things and trying to apply my chemistry knowledge. For example, I explained to my friends how solar panel at my house function. After this course I understand the importance of chemistry to our society as a whole.

  144. I have always been fond of science and its importance to humanity. I personally think science lacks funding in the US compared to our entertainment industry and military spending. My perception of science and chemistry has changed considerably since the beginning of the semester due to a better understanding in chemistry, as there there was a lack thereof when doing personal research or discussing science topics that involve fundamental chemistry knowledge.

  145. Science and chemistry have always been fun subjects for me but, it was always hard to grasp the concepts. I still struggle and having groups in this class helped out a lot to understand Chemistry. I learned a lot and still need to learn more. The Labs help with the learning process and the lecture at the beginning of class. Reading the Book and doing the questions on OLI helped a lot but, was one of those things that burned my brain out. Other than that I think my understanding of science and chemistry has increased and hope to continue learning more.

  146. I always thought science was pretty cool but knew that it was a difficult topic. After taking this class, I still believe in that statement since this class shows how you need to know how to use your resources (such as charts, data, and tables ) to solve many problems. Furthermore, paying attention to detail is crucial such as the type of measurement a question asks for. I learned these things the hard way, so will strive to improve for later classes. All in all, science is cool but hard.

  147. My perspective on science and chemistry from now compared to the beginning changed a bit. I always thought science and chemistry were the same thing but now a see how they are a little different because chemistry is a branch of science. After this course I am looking at things differently because I now know a bit more on the reasons why things do what they do. I enjoyed learning about chemistry and find it to be an interesting subject.

  148. Jose Lezama: Section 1067
My perception of science and chemistry has changed a lot during the course. I thought chemistry did not have anything to do with our everyday life, but that is not the case. We can see that science and chemistry have helped us as humans to achieve many things in the world. Humans have accidentally created many things, which have helped, but others have destroyed them. This means that I have a whole different perception than what I had at the beginning of the course.

  149. Was I going in expecting a new perspective? A little. My view however stayed stagnant. I think the closest thing to a new view on the subject is how everything is classified and labeled even down to the smallest things in our universe, like atoms, but to go into the thought, I simply never knew it’s extent. Also that as much as I love chemistry, I am not gifted in it, and even I in my adoration of the subject will find it perplexing until learned.

  150. My perception of science and chemistry has changed throughout the semester. I have gained a somewhat better understanding of the things around me as I can apply things I learned in this course. From balancing equations to learning about the relationship between temperature and pressure, I feel that I have learned a lot. Before this course, I knew that chemistry was a branch of science, but now I know the specific things chemistry encompasses. It was fascinating yet challenging.

  151. My perception of science and chemistry did change a little. Taking this course definitely changed the way I see things. I learned so much more than I thought I would, even if it was challenging at times. I now see the simplest things around me as so much more interesting.

  152. Jazmin Hernandez; Section 1067

My perception of science has and has not changed. The reason I say so is because I always felt that science is always present in our surroundings and despite not knowing everything about science, it has always captivated me. And after this course, I do feel that I understand more to why certain things have certain outcomes– their explanations. I’d like to say that I’ve learned new concepts that have allowed me to value science more than I did before taking Chemistry 1A.
