  1. Asmahan,
I very much agree with your argument about soap. Due to the hydrogen bonds that then is able to make attack with the oil or grease. This is very similar to what we did in lab on how to remove a stain.

  2. lab section: 1024
    – Gain: laundry detergent
    – Shea Moisture: African black soap
Laundry detergent are made of long molecules called surfactants. The head of the surfactant is hydrophilic and the tail is hydrophobic. The attraction between the head of the surfactant and the water causes the grease/dirt detach from the surface, and the water washes it away.

  3. 1. Colgate Optic White Renewal toothpaste – “Removes 10 years of yellow stains”

Some companies such as Procter & Gamble have refuted Colgate company’s claim about their product’s teeth whitening claiming that it can remove a decade’s worth of yellowing in the space of four weeks.

    2. Yakult Probiotic Drink = “Contains billions of live and active ‘good bacteria.'”

According to its company, their product contains billions of the live and active probiotic Lactobacillus casei Shirota, a “friendly” bacteria, that can help correct imbalances in our digestive system.

1.) Purell Advanced Hand Sanitizer – “Kills 99.99% of most common illness-causing germs.”

Purell hand sanitizers contain, isopropyl alcohol. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers kill many types of viruses by dissolving their fat membranes, and kills bacteria by disrupting their cell membrane. Based on this information I believe that Purell Advanced Hand Sanitizer probably does kill at least some, if not most, of the illness-causing germs when used correctly.

2.) Neutragena Ultra Sheer dry-touch sunscreen 100+ SPF – “Offers superior broad spectrum protection from aging UVA rays and burning UVB rays.”

    The active ingredients are:
    Avobenzone 3% (UV A absorber)
    Homosalate 15% (UV B absorber)
    Octisalate 5% (UV B absorber)
Octocrylene 10% (blocks UV B and short-wave UV A rays)
    Oxybenzone 6 % (blocks UV B and short-wave UV A)

Since the ingredients in the sunscreen absorb and block bock UV A and UV B rays, I believe that Neutragena Ultra Sheer sunscreen does offer the broad spectrum coverage they claim to, so long as enough of the product is applied and continuously reapplied throughout the day.

    1. Hi Mai,
I found your second consumer product interesting because I always wondered whether SPF 15, 30, 50, or 100 was more efficient and in what conditions made the sunscreen more effective.

    2. HI Mai,
I chose to respond to your post because I found your consumer product interesting since you gave great details on your findings and thoughts as well as the product you chose such as hand sanitizer. It has become a needed product since this pandemic and choosing a product that is very prevalent right now is a good choice.

  5. 1). Head & Shoulders from Procter & Gamble-“Don’t be settle be 100% Dandruff free.”
To the Head & Shoulders company their products are being stated to become 100% Dandruff free despite their claims not being 100% true but it doesn’t market them as it for people who maybe having some trouble with dandruff. What makes this shampoo is Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride as this allows the hair to loosen from each other.
2). Dr.Pepper Diet from Dr Pepper Snapple Group-“Always one of a kind”
The diet soda version of Dr.Pepper always mentions how it has no calories to it while also having the same flavor as the original despite a noticeable taste before. The way it works is that instead of having mainly sugar it has 190 mg of sodium in it with 144 mg of caffine.

  6. 1. Red Bull Sugar Free- “Vitalizes body and mind”

Advertisements claim this energy drink to be sweet yet so effective by giving consumers energy. It has been known that sugar has always been the key to waking you up or giving you energy. Red Bull is a product that has been claimed as a better, healthier version of energy drinks since it is claimed as “Sugar Free” . This energy drink is made with the artificial sweeteners aspartame and acesulfame K instead of sugar. However, according to my research, it is said that excess sugar intake, especially from sweetened beverages, may increase your risk of type 2 diabetes. These facts made me believe that this energy drink can be effective but it is likely to cause more harm to younger people as they’re the ones who are more likely to consume energy drinks.

    2. Dove Deodorant- “Stay dry and fresh all day”

Deodorants are claimed to be a product who tackle the odor by targeting the bacteria. In order for deodorants to take action they contain antibacterial compounds, such as triclosan and chlorhexidine. This allows them to carry the deodorant or antiperspirant ingredients onto the skin. On the other hand, I do believe this product helps many people as long as it is applied and continuously applied throughout the day.

  7. 1. Azalea Perez and Lab section 1025
    2. CeraVe Eye Repair Cream and CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum
    3. The second consumer product contains encapsulated retinol to help resurface your skin, licorice root extract to help brighten your skin’s appearance. In addition, it’s formulated with 3 essential ceramides that work together to lock in skins moisture and help restore your skin’s protective barrier, along with soothing niacinamide.

  8. 1) Joshua Riley and Section 1025
    2) Consumer Product 1: AOS (Art of Sport) Deodorant Consumer Product 2: Adidas After-Shave
    3) The AOS Deodorant claims to be Aluminum free, and is instead made with natural botanicals, suggesting a lot of scientific research was done to find a more natural ingredient that could replace aluminum in deoderant that would make it relatively cheap but also allow the product to still reduce odor.

    1. Carlos Rivera Lab 1024
      Hello Joshua,
I find that with the product being Aluminum free a bold chose since the other method they use is a cheaper way to create deodorant, but can still reduce the odor as if it was still being use with Aluminum.

  9. Garnier Fructis “With Active Fruit Protein” Sleek & Shine Leave-
In Conditioning Cream for Frizzy, Dry, Unmanageable Hair

Garnier Fructis claims to tame frizzy hair and leave it sleek and shiny after using their leave-in conditioner. The argan oil (argania spinosa kernel oil) advertised on the bottle is an ingredient that benefits skin and hair with its incredible hydrating properties.

According to the company, they claim their product leaves your face looking fresh and balanced against light makeup, excess oil, or when facing impurities. The product is a deep and gentle clean, lightweight and very moisturizing. There are several hydrating and moisturizing products like propylene glycol, sodium lauroyl glycinate, and coco-betaine. Saccharomyces is a type of yeast that improves absorption and other beneficial nutrients.

    1. Mai Lynn Hunt Lab Section 1024

      Hi Aileen,

I find it interesting how there are so many different types of yeast. Saccharomyces also includes yeast used in food and brewing. As we learn more about the human microbiome, I look forward to seeing how we can continue to use microbes to our advantage.

  10. 1. Consumer Product 1: Hero Force Shield Sunscreen SPF 30.
Consumer Product 2: Caudalie Instant Detox Mask.
    2. The Force Shield sunscreen has Zinc Oxide as the active ingredient. The sunscreen helps protect your skin by absorbing or reflecting UV rays. This sunscreen is also acne friendly. While being in the sun it is always best to have a Broad Spectrum SPF of 15 or higher.

  11. The Ordinary Hyaluronic acid and vitamin b5 serum.

As explained by a board-certified dermatologist, Tsippora Shainhouse, M.D., “Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that occurs naturally in the skin, [and] it helps to bind water to collagen, trapping it in the skin, so that skin can appear plumper, dewier, and more hydrated.”

    Clorox Disinfecting Bleach

Bleach works through an oxidation reaction that removes electrons from chromophores (pigment molecules), which, as a result, leaves the area (that was reacted by the bleach) white; this helps clean up colored stains and change the pigment of items to white.

  12. 1. Lysol disinfecting wipes, Kills 99.9% of viruses and bacteria.
    2. Pine-sol multi-surface cleaner, Cleans & Disinfects 99.9% of germs.

  13. 1.Tide Original Scent Laundry Detergent ” “If it’s got to be clean, it’s got to be Tide” Procter & Gamble
    2. Dove Shampoo, “The secret of beautiful hair” Unilever
    3. Tide states that it would do a better job cleaning than any other detergents and with experience of using it myself I support this claim which can also be supported by things that it is made up of such as Sodium citrate which helps the detergent clean in hard water which is very useful.

  14. 1) Degree Deodorant “Move with confidence”
The deodorant claims to block sweat and activate with when you are on the move. It does have Aluminum Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex which functions as the antiperspirant. ‘Motion sense’ is claiming that the deodorant will release more fragrance when you are moving and helps you stay fresh longer.

    2) RedBull “Vitalize the body and Mind”
It is claimed that top athletes and professionals, college students and travelers worldwide use this product and it helps give strength and energy to both our body and our mind. However I have heard some information that these energy drinks are no good for you and can have negative effects from longterm use. In the ingredients, the top 3 ingredients are carbonated water, sugar, and glucose. No good can come from this maybe a sugar rush and could cause you to crash out after.

  15. 1.Radiant Mint- Crest 3D White
Its claim is to help protect against cavities with its active ingredient being sodium fluoride. Which come to be stand true because as sodium fluoride washed over the tooth surface when in contact with the tooth it is added to the surface of the tooth making it stronger and helps prevent with cavities. As well it stands to whiten teeth due to cleaning silica being part of the tooth paste ingredient.
    2.Vaseline Men Healing Moisture
The claim for this moisturizer is it heals any dry skin in 5 days. The way this comes to work is due to its two main ingredients being petroleum jelly and glycerin.

  16. Product: Kirkland Ultra Clean Laundry Detergent
This detergent claims “tough stain fighting power” and “odor eliminator. I can advocate for this claim since I have personally used this detergent and even though it does do a great job at getting stains out such as dirt but when it comes to more built in stains such as wine, blood, etc. it doesn’t quite do the job. The ingredient Sodium Dodecylbenzene Sulfonate is a cleaning agent that is used help remove these stains.

  17. Hask Tea Tree & Rosemary Oil Scalp Care Shampoo
-“Packed with tea tree oil and rosemary to soothe the scalp and restore strands ; Refreshing herbal scent leaves you feeling invigorated and revitalized”
-Tea tree oil has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties. It’s safe as a topical treatment so people use it for their skin and scalp. However this is only when used in 100% oil, so in a shampoo it may or may not work since it’s diluted.

Aussie Miracle Curls Leave-In Cream Pudding
-“This lightweight, sulfate- and paraben-free formula is made with coconut and jojoba oil and helps lock in moisture while defining curls with a light hold”
-Coconut and jojoba oils are common in hair products. I find these work best if applied on wet hair but they don’t really define curls

    1. Hi Jessica, I found your product interesting because its main ingredients are oils that are said to use when in higher concentration so it would be nice to know how high the concentration has to be in order to be as effective as it is when it isn’t diluted.

  18. Hello Carlos Rivera, I found your tide pod consumer product interesting because now that I’ve gotten to see what its made of (fatty acids, calcium formate, and other chemicals), and that its purpose is to remove stains from clothing, but as to why it became a snack, I question a lot more now.
