Isabel Estrada (lab T/Th 11-2)
My favorite consumer product is an apple because in lab I learned that the browning due to the oxidation of phenolics with oxygen can be prevented by adjusting its pH. To do so we created buffers which react with any added acids or base.
Consumer products work effectively due to science because these products are crafted with chemicals in order to fulfill the needs of a consumer. Such as slowing down the process of rotting in fruits and vegetables. whether its food or technology chemistry is involved.

Lab T/Th 11-2pm
The most interesting consumer product was baking soda. Someone posted that it can be used for extinguishing fires and I thought that was pretty cool. Most people only know about it being used for baking so this was new to me. I guess it cuts off oxygen helping the fire go out.
Consumer products work well due to science because the products have
already been tested and made with specific chemicals so that they can work properly.

My favorite Consumer Product is sodium chloride (NaCl) or salt, because of how many different uses and applications it has, and because of its importance in our daily lives. Sodium chloride can be used to flavor and preserve foods. It is also used in the fermentation process for foods like pickles! Besides seasoning and preserving foods, sodium chloride has many other awesome uses. In hospitals, intravenous sodium chloride solutions are used to supply water and salt to patients, to prevent dehydration. Sodium chloride does not only control the electrolyte balance of fluids in a person’s body, but it also absorbs and transports nutrients, regulates blood pressure, and maintains the right conditions for muscle and nerve functioning. Besides all of that, salt can also be used to lower the freezing point of water and de-ice sidewalks and roadways during snowy days. Large quantities of sodium chloride are also used in industrial manufacturing settings to make products like plastic, glass, chlorine, household bleach, detergents, dyes, etc. I just find it amazing how a simple and common compound can benefit us so much, just because of the way it reacts when it is contact with other substances and chemicals. I never thought that we could do this much with just salt!
Consumer products work effectively due to science because by understanding the concepts behind the combinations and reactions between elements and compounds in our environment, we are able to apply our scientific knowledge to make products that can satisfy our needs and improve our living standards. It is amazing how many of us do not know about the significance and the impact of science in our everyday life. Almost every product we use, including food, has been developed by the use of science. Behind every product, there is a chemical reaction going on. And, if we do not apply the appropriate knowledge/technique when making these products, the reactions will not occur and the products will not work. This applies even when making food! So, it is the science that we learn that help us understand how to use effectively what we have around us to improve our lives.

My favorite consumer product so far is salt (NaCl) because of the different tasks it can be used. Salt is used for a variety of things. For example, adding on food gives it flavor, using it in kitchen purposes also helps speed up cooking time, food is ready faster. Salt is also used to test the freshness of an egg. Salt is a mineral composed of sodium chloride and it is a product individuals use daily for different purposes.
Consumer products work efficiently due to science because chemistry is in everything we do. The properties in the products are helpful for us in everyday life because it makes it easier to use and understand.

Lab 11-2
The consumer product that I found interesting was soda. Soda is a carbonated drink with sweetened artificial flavor. It is one of Americas favorite drink. It is very interesting to see that the carbon dioxide gas in soda plays a major role. For example, carbon dioxide is what causes the popping noise when one opens the can or bottle.
Consumer products work marvelously due to science because it allows consumer products like soda to be enjoyed by the consumer. For example, the carbon dioxide in the soda gives an interesting mouthfeel giving the soda an interesting acidic taste. If carbon dioxide was not there, the soda would be plain, flat and uninteresting because when the soda gets worm, the gas (CO2) gets to get more energy and therefore leaving the soda more quickly. This is something that people don’t consider thinking about when drinking their sodas.

T/Th 11-2
My favorite consumer product is water.
Water has several purposes: keep several living organisms alive and help create other products such as shampoo. Personally, I feel that water was the highlight of the consumer products because one of its most important purposes is to keep the temperature of the human body regulated. This consumer products works accordingly due to science because of heat exchange. For example, if the human body is extremely hot after an exercise, the human body sweats. This helps regulate the human temperature because sweat gains heat and the human body loses heat. This process helps humans cool off. Therefore, water serves its purpose to regulate temperature due to heat exchange.
Lyric Batistiana 11am-2pm Lab
My favorite consumer product is cheese.
It’s very interesting to find that cheesemaking is the controlled process of removing a substance from the milk itself in order for curds to be made. Milk is an emulsion of fats and casein. This process concentrates the milk’s protein, fat and other nutrients which then makes cheese.
Consumer products work effectively due to science because it shows how the process of chemicals are used in these products for it to allow in working efficiently, and they are always generalized on a daily basis.
Michelle Hernandez T-TH 11-2pm,
Bleach (NaClO):
Sodium hypochlorite is a strong oxidizing agent in liquid form and is greenish or yellowish in color. This Consumer Product is well known for disinfecting and washing any white clothes.
Complete the following sentence: Consumer products work great due to science because the reaction occurring when bleach breaks the bond with stains on clothes or bacteria on any surface.
While researching and looking up different consumer products I came across a bunch of different ones. However, my favorite has to be rubbing alcohol also known as nail polish remover. I find this product interesting because it is used for many other things besides to remove nail polish which is very useful. I will use my science knowledge when buying products to see how much chemicals and substance are in the products I’m buying.
James Yhip, Section 1107
This semester I found carbonated drinks interesting because of the interaction between temperature and how long the CO2 stays in the drink. I know now to only buy carbonated drinks that are cold because the CO2 will stay inside the liquid and my drink won’t become flat.
Consumer products of the week have been a great addition to learning about the real-life applications of chemistry. One of my favorite consumer products was probably hydrogen peroxide. I found it the most interesting because learning about the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide gave me a logical reason why my own hydrogen peroxide at home was not bubbling up on certain surfaces. Using my knowledge acquired from this class will help me when buying products because I will know which one is best according to the chemistry.
Hi Gabriela,
I found it interesting that hydrogen peroxide was your favorite consumer product out of them all. I found this interesting because you stated that with your knowledge on this product you will now use it to come up with a logical reason why my own hydrogen peroxide at home was not bubbling up on certain surfaces.
One of my favorite consumer products studied thus far has been baking soda. I found baking soda interesting because of its ability to demonstrate the concepts of thermodynamics, entropy, and spontaneity. Now that I understand baking soda spontaneously decomposes at room temperature, I will store my baking soda in the refrigerator.
Evangelia Espinosa Section 1007
Of all my research I found that Hydrogen Peroxide was the most interesting product. It’s a common household product yet has so many different uses like mouthwash, or cleaning a wound. With my chemistry knowledge I now understand why H2O2 reacts with bacteria to “clean” an area. Now everytime I use it I know that if it bubbles up it is doing it’s magic!
James Yhip, Section 1107
Hello Evangelia,
I enjoyed your post about Hydrogen Peroxide because I forgot about all of the interesting things you could do with it. You were very detailed so it reminded me of all the unique things H2O2 could do. If I design a consumer product, I would make it very clear for people to understand what it was made of so chemists like us could enjoy learning about the product.
Hello there Evangelina,
I found your consumer product Hydrogen Peroxide to be interesting because it is something that a lot of us use and not everyone knows the different ways we can use it. It caught my attention and If I were to design consumer product I would make it something very easy and fun to learn, something that even kids to try doing and allowing people to learn and see how Chemistry works in itself.
One of my favorite consumer product would be vinegar because I learned that the properties of vinegar make it useful for lots of things like cleaning. I will use the knowledge I have in science for when I buy products to see if they can be made for more than one thing.
Briana Garcia
Lab Section 1108
My favorite item that I researched was that Hydrogen Peroxide isn’t exactly a disinfectant. What happens is that hydrogen peroxide reacts with a catalyst and decomposes at a rapid rate. This is what causes the oxygen bubbles and dislodges debris from a wound.
I will use my chemistry knowledge to unsure that the cleaning purchases do what they are meant to do and also not buy unnecessary products like laundry disinfectant.
Out of all the products, I found hydrogen peroxide more interesting since you can use it for many things. Before I didn’t realize how many things you can do with hydrogen peroxide until now. I will use my chemistry knowledge and experience when I buy and use consumer products by knowing what’s in the products.
Hello Cecilia,
I found your consumer product to be interesting because a household item like hydrogen peroxide could not only be used as a disinfectant but also as a cleaner. If I were to design a consumer product I make sure that it could be used for multiple purposes and safe for people to use and keep as a household necessity.
Chanelle Argueta, Lab Section 1107
The most exciting consumer product is acetone, a common solvent. My chemistry knowledge allows me to understand that “like dissolve like.” This phrase means polar solvents will dissolve only polar materials, and non-polar solvents with react with non-polar products, but some products can react with both since one part of the product is polar and the other side non-polar.
Acetone has very non-polar and polar properties simultaneously. Its polar C=O bonds make it soluble in water, while its non-polar methyl (CH3) groups can interact with non-polar compounds. That is why non-polar substances like wax, which is hard to remove with water, can easily be removed with a solvent like acetone. Nail polis’s ingredient resin is a very non-polar substance but can easily remove by acetone but can’t be removed by water.
Jesus Delgadillo, Lab Section 1108
The most interesting Consumer Product to me is Heinz distilled white vinegar. I found it so interesting because of its versatility. It can be used as a cleaner and it is used in cooking. It’s used to clean hard water stains and it is also an ingredient in my favorite spicy sauce. I will use my science knowledge and experience to not accidentally mix chemicals that could be potentially lethal. Like bleach and acid.
Hiroki Terada, section 1107.
Jesus, I found your description interesting cause I also didn’t realize how vinegar can be a multiple use product and not used just for cooking. If I designed a consumer product, I would probably try to make it a multi-purpose tool like vinegar is. It would probably be along the lines of a cleaning product that could clean a variety of stains.
Hi Jesus,
I find the product you chose to be very interesting too. The fact that vinegar has so many different uses blows my mind. You can use it to clean with or use it for cooking which I find scary yet fascinating.
If I were to design a consumer product I would make sure it is easy and safe to use. I would list all the ingredients and what you could use the product for.
Adam Garcia, Lab Section 1108
I really enjoy my partner’s comment since it insinuates that mixing life-threatening chemicals is a daily issue to him, something so daily as making up the bed. But in all seriousness, don’t mix those things, and am glad he’s still kicking!
If I design a consumer product, I would list all the small experiments that are possible to do. Something like mixing corn starch and water together to make oobleck. Only safe experiments of course, as to play off my partner’s cool comment over there.
Hello Jesus, I found the Heinz distilled white vinegar consumer product interesting as I was not completely aware of its versatility as a cooking and cleaning product; specifically its ability to clean hard water stains because the cleaning products I have used in the past are not very effective. It would be interesting to find a multi use vinegar consumer product which enhances its versatility from cleaning to cooking. If I design a consumer product, I would ensure ingredients are all natural, healthy, environmental friendly, and ensure I list any potential hazards.
Adam Garcia, Lab Section 1108
The most interesting consumer product would be hydrogen peroxide. The reason is because of the misconception I originally held. I thought that the hydrogen peroxide “directly” reacted with our blood(Hemoglobin) to destroy the cell of bacteria. I was only partially correct, the reaction is more complex, it isn’t a simple reaction because our blood is a catalyst. It’s amazing how is such reactions take our blood and then return it back with the products, but for a split moment in space, it didn’t exist anymore.
ADDENDUM:
I will use this knowledge in science to actually see how products work and not base my world views on product marketing. To see how all the “magic” is really simple science with a new coat of paint as to value the true leaps in technology and understanding.
Hi Adam,
I found your description of hydrogen peroxide interesting because it also surprised me to learn that it did not directly react with blood or bacteria. If I design a consumer product, I would make sure that people actually knew what reactions it caused, to avoid misconceptions like this!
Jesus Delgadillo 1108,
I enjoyed your description of hydrogen peroxide. I was surprised to learn that our own blood is a catalyst for the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. I found that remarkably interesting.
If I design a consumer product, I will try to use ingredients that people can pronounce. And if they don’t, I will set up a document that describes each chemical used. So those consumers know exactly what they are consuming.
The most interesting consumer product was alcohol. It was pretty interesting to learn what causes a hangover when you drink too much alcohol. Admittedly, before this course I was unaware why or what caused a hangover this alcohol metabolism uses dehydrogenases. I can use my chemistry knowledge and experience when I buy and use consumer products because I am more aware of the process of alcohol metabolism.
Hello everyone, the consumer product I found most interesting was Beauty 360 Advanced Nail Polish Remover. I do not use this product very often but I am aware it is a very common product used in salons. I was not aware of the fact that this can damage the skin around the nail, in the future I will try to use the alternative suggested which contains ethyl-acetate. I will use my science knowledge and experiences when I purchase consumer products to ensure others are aware of how toxic a product can be and the alternatives around it by taking into consideration the chemicals and substances in a product such as the acetone in this product which causes the skin and nail to become dehydrated.
Chanelle Argueta, Lab Section 1107
Hi Adrianna,
I found this consumer product is interesting since it’s important what type of acetone works to avoid damaging the nails. The phrase that I found interesting is this specific Beauty 360 Advanced Nail Polish Remover…a very common product used in salons…can damage the skin around the nail. In the future, I will try to use the alternative suggested, which contains ethyl-acetate.” I found this information interesting since it is essential to know the side effect of products to avoid using them and find better alternatives.
If I design a consumer product, I will try to make it affordable in public and refrain from using lethal chemicals and avoid animal testing. An example of a consumer product I would make is a series of perfumes.
Hello Classmates,
One of the Consumer Products of the Week that I found interesting throughout the semester was Alcohol. I found it really interesting being able to understand the fundamentals of Alcohol and how it affects the body and learning about the aspects of Alcohol. It is something that many people drink at parties and on occasion, but not many people really know how it affects one body and metabolism. Applying this to what I know now about science and my experience with it I am better equipped when it comes to knowledge of Alcohol and the breakdown of it.
Hey Manuel, I think that it is pretty interesting how you connected what we learned here in chemistry to something that happens when we are away from school, but I totally agree with you on how knowing how it works and what it does to our bodies can actually help give us some techniques. Also if we know how it works and what it does we can find ways to relieve things like hangovers. If I design a consumer product I would ensure that it is something useful and provides utility to the general public, not just people who already know chemistry, I would probably make something for cleaning, whether that be absorbing or lime stain removal.
Hello Hiroki,
I found your post to be interesting since we both put hydrogen peroxide as our favorite consumer product. I had been using hydrogen peroxide but much like you, I didn’t know the helpful information I know about now including its decomposition and why it’s in a black bottle container.
If I design a consumer product, I would make it easy to read the label and specify what the functions of the ingredients are.
Hello Hiroki,
Great post! I found your post interesting because while reading your post I felt the same way. Admielty, before this class I did not know how H2O2 worked. Like you mentioned because of this product I will check shelf life of products solely because of this product.
If I design a consumer product, I would include a shelf life on the in the products label.
1] Daniel Contreras, Section 1108
2] My favorite consumer product is also my most interesting which was the Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing. I found this interesting because I did not know that salad dressing in general have low pH levels causing it to be acidic. Having too much of this can actually harm you because of the certain ingredients in it. This could also be the reason why it last longer in storage compared to other foods due to all the preservatives in it.
3] I will use my science knowledge and experience when I buy and use consumer products by thinking twice about buying or using a consumer product depending what the ingredients are, which can be seen in the in the nutritional label.
1) Jonathan Morales, Lab Section 1108
2) I found Daniel’s description interesting because I never really questioned why some foods last longer than others.
3) Based on my research, I found that “high acid” foods will lose quality faster than “low acid” foods like meat and vegetables if each one is stored correctly. Based on this fact’s relation to my consumer product, I want to ensure my design avoids the process of becoming obsolete by using materials that don’t need to be replaced frequently.
1. Jorge Flores
2. I found Daniel’s consumer product to be interesting because I also did not know that Hidden Valley ranch was of low pH which makes it acidic. Therefore, as stated I found this cool because if too much is ingested it could cause harm.
3. If I were to design my very own consumer product I would use my scientific knowledge gained from chemistry to construct something safe for the environment. This being safe for people to use too and making sure there aren’t any harsh ingredients. My idea would be to either make clean biodegradable plastic or a shampoo.
1) Angel Brito-Pizano (section 1108)
2) I find Ranch Dressing interesting because I did not know ranch dressing would have a low PH level or have ingredients that can cause heartburn even though I don’t eat/like ranch dressing.
3) If I design a consumer product, I would construct something using safe ingredients that are not harmful to individuals.
This has to be the most interesting comment that I read about a consumer product. I never really think about what pH level the food that I am about to eat is. Now I know that ranch dressing is acidic and can cause harm.
3) If I were to design a consumer product, I would try my best to keep them as safe for the consumer as possible. Everything has negative effects but we can limit the number of negative things in our foods. If the consumer is happy with my product, then I will be successful.
Javier Soto Section 1107
2) I found Daniel Contreras Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing most interesting since I was not aware of the low PH level let alone the harmful ingredients found in the ranch which could cause heartburn. I was expecting low PH levels from hot sauces but not ranch.
3) I will my science knowledge and experience by looking at certain foods PH to determine if they are acidic or not.
1. Joshua Riley, 1107
2. Javier, I found your comment about Ranch dressing interesting, because like you I wasn’t expecting Ranch to have low PH levels, and to add surprise, I wouldn’t have expected the Ranch to contain ingredients that cause heartburn, it shows how a little chemistry knowledge can really broaden your knowledge of little products.
3. If I ever design a consumer product, I would make sure to state all the ways it’s reversible, that way in the event the consumer product causes problems people can reverse it and stay clear of any harmful effects. For example, if I designed the car battery, I would put on it how baking soda you would need to neutralize it if the battery ever broke and released its chemicals.
1)Alexandria Soto, 1108
2) The product I found most interesting is vinegar because I was not aware of it removing water stains or cleaning stains. Also, it can also be consumed which makes it even more interesting.
3) This information will help me next time I go shopping for vinegar
1) Miguel Martinez (1108)
2) An interesting consumer product of mine was Crisco shortening. I found it interesting because I learned how shortening is created through hydrogenation. I was able to directly relate something in my kitchen to what we were studying.
3) I’ll use my science experience to understand the basic chemistry that is behind certain products.
Jose Emilio Lomeli-Vega 1108
I found the crisco shorting to be a interesting because you were able to connect what we can learn in chem which is hydrogenation and relate it to the real world
If I design a consumer product, I would create a chemical a healthy fat that will not be as unhealthy as shortening. Perhaps something plant based.
2)The consumer product that I found most interesting has to be Tums antacid. I found this product interesting because it is insoluble to water due to it containing carbonate salt in the solid state. But the way for tums to have a reaction is with acid, in usual cases stomach acid( the calcium carbonate acid dissolves in acid).
3)The way I will use the gained knowledge and experience from this science course when buying and using consumer products is better understanding the active ingredients from either cleaning products to hygiene products. To see if they are beneficial or even come to be harmful from usage.
2) The consumer product I found interesting was salt. Throughout the course of taking CHEM-1B I learned that salt is an electrolyte and can be an insulator. What I found to also be interesting was that salt decreases the freezing point of water, however I also believe that the boiling point of water too is decreased when adding salt. We know it is an ionic compound that is soluble in water. But, what I found to be cool was that this ionic copound’s solubility can be affected by different factors like changing temperature, concentration, or even pressure. The following affects the solubility of salt in water.
3) The way I will use the knowledge I gained from taking Chem-1B when purchasing consumer products would be by looking at certain ingredients carefully. Whether it be food, shampoo, drinks, or household cleaning supplies—I now view products differently. Such as acids and bases and how they are used in our everyday lives. I have better knowledge on how certain ingredients can be harmful or bad for our health. Such ingredients can be sulfates.
1. Angel Carrillo and lab section 1108
2. I found Jorge’s description to be interesting because it is crazy how much salt is used in chemistry and how its ionic compound’s solubility is so easily affected by just temperature, pressure, and concentration.
3. If I design a consumer product, I would look at the different substances I plan to use to create the consumer product and choose the healthier and less harmful substances for that product; by seeing their chemical and physical products and how they affect humans.
My favorite consumer product was the stainless steel refrigerator. I found this interesting because I hadn’t considered how a steel alloy could prevent rust.
I will use my science knowledge to be more thoughtful when buying cleaners, especially acid-base reactions and how it’ll affect what I’m trying to clean.
1. Joshua Riley, 1107
2. My most favorite consumer product I’ve chosen personally would be Carbonated Water(for a specific brand: Bubly) because I find it so interesting that an everyday drink we all consume with no question has so many scientific principles within it: gas,acid/bases, and even states of matter change (heating it up will cause it to go from liquid to gas). It goes to show how everything we use and have in our life, no matter how big or small, has a lot of thought put into it.
3. I will use scientific knowledge gained in this class to allow me to look at chemical reactions in our everyday lives( heartburn, cleaning stains off a bathtub, or even starting a fire) and if ever put in a situation where I don’t have the proper tools to accomplish those chemical reactions, find an alternate solution that’ll get the job done using the scientific knowledge gained in this class.
Joseph Tinney, Section 1108
I find this description interesting because carbonated water is such a simple product but, as Josh points out, it still has a lot of chemistry going on internally. It’s interesting how even the simplest things are full of chemistry.
If I designed a consumer product, I would try and use the least harmful and simplest chemical processes in the creation of the product. I think consumers would respond well to a product that is made from simple processes and without heavily modified chemical compounds.
My favorite consumer product was Babybel original semisoft cheese because I thought it was cool that we made milk curdle by lowering the pH in a lab.
I will use my science knowledge and experience when buying products by checking the ingredients, thinking about how they work, and then considering if there may be an alternative method.
1. Jonathan Morales, section 1108
2. My favorite consumer product is a refrigerator since I find it interesting that we can predict the heat q (exothermic or endothermic) and work (w) based on the pressures of the gas and liquid.
3. I will use my scientific knowledge to understand the chemical reactions that occur in my everyday life and use it to find a solution. For example, last week my mom wanted me to figure out how to remove brown stops off the refrigerator. We originally thought it was mold, but after some research, I realized it was rust. To remove the rust, I used baking soda (a strong base) to react with acids like vinegar. This causes bubbling to occur which helps lift rust off the refrigerator which made my mom happy.
The consumer product I found most interesting was ginger beer. I found it interesting because I was thinking about what makes the drink fizzy. It’s the dissolved carbon dioxide in the drink. One way of carbonating drinks is to use yeast. When placed in a warm, moist place and given sugar as a food source, the yeast become active and multiply. Meanwhile, they produce carbon dioxide gas as a metabolic waste product. Just like in humans, the metabolic waste of yeast is carbon dioxide gas. As long as the yeast have enough sugar to eat, they keep making carbon dioxide. When the yeast run out of sugar, they start the fermentation process. This process produces alcohol as a waste product. This is why yeast are used to produce the alcohol found in beer. We refrigerate our ginger beer so that the yeast don’t multiply so much that they run out of food, and thus produce alcohol instead of carbon dioxide.
This knowledge will help me next time I use my product since when you drink a fizzy drink you want it to stay fizzy for a long period of time and this knowledge will help me do that.
1) Miguel Martinez (1108)
2) I found this consumer product to be the most interesting because it clearly explained how yeast is used in food production. It can be used for leavening in bread or to produce alcohol.
3) If I were to design a consumer product I would provide a description as to how the product works and how it can be used. I think it’s helpful to know the process of how the product is made and how to use the product, rather than blindly using a product.
I found this product description the most interesting because it helped me understand exactly how alcohol is made during fermentation. I hadn’t realized that refrigerating the beer could result in more alcohol and less carbon dioxide.
If I design a consumer product I would think carefully about the kinds of substances that my product may come into contact with, and pick chemicals that play nicely together.
1. Angel Brito-Pizano, section 1108
2. My favorite consumer product was vinegar. I find it interesting how vinegar can be a great cleaner for cleaning and removing stains around surfaces. Vinegar is also used for cooking and baking different types of foods.
3. I will use my science knowledge and experience by using vinegar for cleaning surfaces around my house rather than buying expensive cleaning supplies.
1. Angel Carrillo and lab section 1108
2. The most interesting Consumer Product was the refrigerator because it was used to calculate “q”, and I would have never thought to use a refrigerator like that.
3. How I will use my science knowledge and experience when I buy and use consumer products is by recognizing which items is more efficient in cleaning, cooking, etc; through using their chemical/physical properties.
My favorite consumer product was hydrogen peroxide because I saw the science of how it can remove a stain.
I would use this consumer product in the future when I may be doing laundry and also look at other potential products to use when trying to remove stains and determine which one would be the most effective.
My favorite consumer product was vinegar because I saw the science of how it can remove a stain. Another one was also hydrogen peroxide.
I would use this consumer product in the future when I may be doing laundry and also look at other potential products to use when trying to remove stains and determine which one would be the most effective.
My favorite consumer product was vinegar because not only does it remove stains, it also neutralizes the smell of alkaline odors due to it acetic acid found in vinegar.
If I design a consumer product that has multiple purposes like vinegar while also being environmentally/consumer friendly..
Angelica Castellanos, Section 1108,
My favorite consumer product is and always will be hydrogen peroxide. I never knew there was such an interesting chemical that could help heal a wound instantly. I remember I put a drop of hydrogen peroxide on a finger cut i had, and when i instantly saw the reaction that it was provoking, I felt so amazed. I will use my science knowledge and experience on any one who is found wounded, i know that the hydrogen peroxide will take action immediately.
1) Daniel Contreras, Section 1108
2) I found Jose Zarazua’s consumer product interesting because I didn’t know that that tums dissolve in your stomach using your the liquids in you body. The stomach pain that you have can go away by adding the calcium carbonate acid which then dissolves in acid.
3) If I design a consumer product, I would design a product like that can make you feel better right away when you get sick like tums without any negative effects. I would want it to be a pill so strong so that you can feel the impact within a few minutes.
Angelica Castellanos, Section 1108
I found Brito-Pizanos’s consumer product really interesting because i had never known that vinegar could so so much more than a washing machine to remove a stain.
If I design a consumer product, I would create a marker that anyone can just carry around in case they have stain their shirts, they’ll instantly be able to remove the stain.
I found the cheese consumer product interesting because before I never really thought about the process to make cheese, and all the different chemical reactions into making said cheese.
If I design a consumer product, I would take into account environmental effects, such as mass-produced vinegar having harmful additives but the base product (the acetic acid and water) being fine for the environment.
Cesar Amador
The consumer product that I found really interesting was
vinegar. Vinegar can be used to get rid of some stains cause by other acidic or slightly acidic fluids.
I will use my knowledge of vinegar by making a vinegar solution with water to create a cleaning product. I could also mix vinegar with other substances such as baking soda to get rid of tougher stains that I might encounter.
Hey Cesar I found your consumer product interesting because not only is vinegar used in the kitchen it can be used all around the house as a cleaning product and bug repellent.
Cesar Amador
I found Kristin Barber-Scott description about the stainless steel refrigerator interesting since it made me aware that a lot of products that are made with metal are coated with chemical on top to avoid oxidation on the metals.
If I design a consumer product that contains anything that could be oxidized, I’ll make sure that they’re coated with the correct substance to make sure that the product lasts a long time without it oxidizing.
2) I found Daniel Contreras description interesting because their is a lot of truth in where the general public might purchase products with taking in consideration in detail of what it might contain or how it might be harmful in later time when applied or consumed regularly.
3) If I come to design a consumer product in the future my product will be focused on being as eco-friendly that it could be form its ingredients to its packing being bio-degradable and as natural where it can’t expose harmful side affects to a person later on. Such making a shampoo or body wash.

2. My favorite consumer product is vinegar because it can be used to cram many surfaces and can help take out the water marks in the sink and bathtub.
3. If I were do design a consumer product I would create a product that will help you contain the vinegar while soaking a shower head rather than someone Using a plastic bag that they end up throwing away after one use.

1. My favorite consumer product would be vinegar because it is not only a cooking essential it can be a eco friendly alternative for cleaning products.
2. If I design a consumer product, I would create a solution that can immediately put out fires as soon as it touches a flame. Especially those big forest fires that that take a mission to turn off.

The most interesting consumer product to me is the Tums antacid. I think it’s cool how someone who has heartburn, which is caused by excessive acid in the stomach, can treat by taking Tums antacid, which has calcium carbonate which reacts with the excess acid by taking in H+ ions. This results in less acid and equilibrium in the stomach environment.
That is very interesting and cool, now I know what to use if I get a heartburn.
My favorite consumer product is Dawn Green Apple Hand Soap (or any hand soap based on fruit or plants) because of the similar scented fragrance of an actual apple. With what I’ve learned during labs about cleaning products such as soap, it’ll be useful in cleaning up difficult stains with this product.
David Mancera 1065
I find this description interesting because when it comes to soaps, the scents and the ability of the soap to remove stains are cool. I really enjoyed lab when we were making the esters to make the sents I found it interesting how the esters were made and how they are used for the scents of different soaps and other products.

The most interesting consumer product is making ice cream. I found it cool how ice and salt will make ice cream. Along with reaching the freezing point depression. It was cool because once you were done you would eat your own ice cream.
Ana T. 1065
I found this description the most interesting because it explains how there’s not a lot of ingredients needed to make ice cream and how the freezing point depression part of chemistry is related to the forming of ice cream.
If I design a consumer product, I would advertise it with chemistry related terms to make it more appealing to those who know chemistry and just to make it sound cooler.

I think my favorite consumer product was Jell-O. It’s fascinating how it goes through the process to become the gelatinous form that we know as Jello and the reaction mechanism in the jello to have that happen. Using the experiences and knowledge that I have gained from this class, I will be able to decide what is good or bad in my food relative the what in the products I purchase and how it can affect me.

The most interesting consumer product for me this semester was cheese. Learning about the cheese making process made me not want to ever eat cheese again. However, cheese tastes great so I’m not sure if I could give it up.
With my science knowledge I will always think about how cheese is made with fungi and bacteria when I see cheese at the grocery store.
Section 1065
I think the most interesting product was babybel cheese, because the process of turning milk into cheese and the ripening process is rather intriguing.
With my new science knowledge, I can now understand different ways of making cheese and incorporate new cultures and textures into the process.
Section 1065
I found Carly’s post the most interesting because I really enjoy eating cheese and trying different kinds. I think the process of making cheese is also very interesting. If I were to design a consumer product I would take everything we learned into consideration to make it have as few flaws as possible.

I think the most interesting consumer product we used was the rock salt in order to make ice cream. It was intriguing to see how easy it is to actually make ice cream with only a handful of ingredients. With my knowledge and experience from this class I will know how to pick out products and how they can affect me.

I found this description the most interesting because I was not aware of how easy ice cream can be made it’s household items. If I design a consumer product I would market it as an educational product due to the chemistry that is involved in so many products.
Jose 1065
I found this very interesting because of how rock salt creates ice cream. If I design a consumer product I would show and explain how things are done and the process behind it.
I found that perfumes are the most interesting consumer products because of the process of making them. Learning that mixing acids with alcohols to create different esters was very intriguing to me. Smelling different perfumes now makes me think back to that lab. I will use my science knowledge and experience to make more informed decisions when I purchase and use any of the consumer products we learned about.
I found this post interesting because being able to create perfumes with different alcohols and acids was a fun experience for me due to the combinations possible. If I were to design a consumer product, I would make a product that is effective for its purpose, but not strong enough to damage the surrounding environment.

The most interesting consumer product to me was the Tums anti acid. I thought it was interesting because I am sure this is a product we all used at least once and it was interesting to learn the chemical reactions that happen inside our body when we use this product.
The most interesting consumer product to me was hydrogen peroxide because learning that it can remove hard water stains was something I never thought of before. With my new science knowledge, I will be able to determine whether a product fits my needs, or is more or less effective than another.

I found this post interesting because it is true that many consumer products can be used in ways that may not be advertised. If I design a consumer product, I would create such a product that could be infinitely beneficial. It would be the ultimate consumer product. Everyone would buy my product.

The most interesting consumer product for me was perfume. Prior to this lab, I was not aware of what produced the smells of perfume. I think it’s cool how mixing alcohol and acid creates an ester that gives the perfume its scent. I will use my scientific knowledge and experience when picking out consumer products to help me pick out the products that are better for me.
Hey Liz,
Perfumes are definitely a product that almost everyone uses and it was interesting to learn the process of how it is made.
Hello Lizbeth
I enjoy the smell of perfumes and it was interesting to know how how to create esters with different kinds of smells.
I found my classmate’s description of ice cream the most interesting because ice cream is a desert that I enjoyed as a kid and still like today. If I designed a consumer product, I would start by think about a problem I would like to solve, and the problem’s correlation with chemistry.

The one I found the most interesting was the Modelo Especial, Beer because its fun to see the chemistry behind alcoholic beverages. If I designed a consumer product, I would use my experience in chemistry to change the properties so that hangovers are less painful.

The consumer product that I found most interesting was perfume. I always thought the perfume was made by crushing nice-smelling objects or combining powders. I never really thought about the chemistry that goes into creating perfumes. If I were to design my own consumer product I would look back at my Chem 1B notes to make sure I get the chemistry down right.
The consumer product that I found most interesting was ice cream. This is because I like ice cream, and it has been a family thing to buy ice cream from the ice cream truck on weekends. If I were to design a consumer product, I would research and use chemistry to make something that smells good and tastes good.
Hi Azucena,
It’s nice that you want to design a product that tastes good. It must be really nice to spend that time with your family. If I design a consumer product hopefully it is something that helps people.

The consumer product I found the most interesting was the cheese. Being an Ag major it was somewhat in my wheelhouse, but not something I was too familiar with. While I may not eat this cheese I can use this new found knowledge of cheese-making to impress my friends.
Section: 1065
The consumer product that I found to be the most interesting would be Beer. If I was ever able to design a beer I would like to make it less dense and more hydrating. Less calories and less hangovers
I found this consumer product fascinating because making perfumes requires organic functional groups such as alcohols and acids reacting to make an ester. If I design a consumer product, I will make sure I have the right alcohol and acid I need in order to make the product to have a great scent such as cologne.
